I have a 2005 2500hd and the service air bag indicator is on

My service air bag indicator is on and does any one know what to do or how to service the air bag with out it being taken to a garage. i have removed the fuse under the hood until i can get the problem fixed.

Working on the SRS can be very hazardous. For this reason I suggest you let an expert repair the problem whatever it is.

Why is 'check air bag' indicator on?


The air bag indicator is lit as the result of a error found during the internal diagnostics by the SRS computer.

Reset airbag light


Hey Earl, what's going on ? The air bag module is usually under the passenger seat or the center console ! The only way to turn off the light is with a up grade scan tool , not code reader. An the light is on for a reason , problem with the system ! If you don't know about this don't mess with it , you could deploy an air bag !
The AIR BAG indicator, located on the instrument panel cluster (IPC) is used to notify the driver of SIR system malfunctions and to verify that the SDM is communicating with the IPC. When the ignition is turned ON, the SDM is supplied with ignition 1 voltage and requests the IPC to flash the AIR BAG indicator 7 times. While flashing the indicator, the SDM conducts test on all SIR system components and circuits. If no malfunctions are detected the SDM will communicate with the IPC through the class 2 serial data circuit and request the IPC to turn the AIR BAG indicator OFF. The SDM provides continuous monitoring of the air bag circuits by conducting a sequence of checks. If a malfunction is detected the SDM will store a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and request the IPC to turn the AIR BAG indicator ON. The presence of a SIR system malfunction could result in non-deployment of the air bags. The AIR BAG indicator will remain ON until the malfunction has been repaired.

Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering

Depowering Procedure

WARNING: Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental

restraint system (SF3) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce

the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.

WARNING: Never probe the connectors on the airbag module. Doing so can result in

air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury, do not use any memory saver

devices.

NOTE: Ifa seat equipped with a seat mounted side airbag and or a safety belt

pretensioner (if equipped) system is being serviced, the supplemental restraint system

(SES) must be depowered.

NOTE: The air bag warning lamp illuminates when the RCM fuse is removed and the

ignition switch is ON. This is normal operation and does not indicate a supplemental

restraint system (SRS) fault.

NOTE: The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle

to the customer

1. Turn all vehicle accessories OFF.

2. Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

3. At the central junction box (Cm), located below the LH side of the instrument panel,

remove the cover and the restraints control module (RCM) fuse F223 (lOA) from

the CTh. For additional information, refer to the Wiring Diagram Manual.

4. Turn the ignition ON and visually monitor the air bag indicator for at least 30

seconds. The air bag indicator will remain lit continuously (no flashing) if the correct

ROsI fuse has been removed, If the air bag indicator does not remain lit

continuously, remove the correct RCM fuse before proceeding

5. Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

6. WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the

backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or

side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before set-ricing,

replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors,

such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood

latches.

To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable

and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power

supplies (if equipped).

Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

Repoweri.ng Procedure

1. WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system service

only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in

injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.

Make sure all restraint system diagnostic tool(s) that may have been installed during

the repair have been removed from the vehicle and all SRS components are

connected.

2. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to ON.

3. Install the ROsI fuse F2.23 (lOA) to the DB and install the cover.

4. WARNING: Be sure that nobody is in the vehicle and that there is nothing

blocking or set in front of any air bag module when the battery ground cable is

connected.

Connect the battery ground cable.

5. Prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS) as follows:

Turn the ignition key from ON to OFF. Wait 10 seconds, then turn the key back to

ON and visually monitor the air bag indicator with the air bag modules installed. The

air bag indicator will light continuously for approximately six seconds and then turn

off. If an air bag supplemental restraint system (SF3) fault is present, the air bag

indicator will:

- failto light.

- remain lit continuously.

- flash.

The flashing might not occur until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition switch

has been turned from the OFF to the ON position. This is the time required for the

restraints control module (RCM) to complete the testing of the SRS. if the air bag

indicator is inoperative and a SRS fault exists, a chime will sound in a pattern of 5

sets of 5 beeps. If this occurs, the air bag indicator and any SRS fault discovered

must be diagnosed and repaired.

Service air bag indicator light on dash stays on


In most cases this problem is caused by the rotating ribbon circuit contact under the steering wheel having a broken filament, the part is known as a clock spring contact, u will need to properly disarm the airbag and remove the steering wheel to access the part. WARNING: Failure to disarm the airbag system can result in an unexpected Airbag deployment and possible serious personnel injury disconnect the battery 30 minutes prior to start of work.

Passenger Air Bag Deactivation (PAD) Indicator
The passenger air bag deactivation (PAD) indicator is a visual indicator used to inform the front seat occupants of the passenger air bag deactivation state. The PAD indicator is a stand-alone lamp installed into the vehicle instrument panel in a position visible to each front seat occupant.
The restraints control module (RCM) controls the state of the PAD indicator through a direct hardwire connection, based on information provided by the occupant classification sensor (OCS) system and the passenger air bag deactivation (PAD) switch. The PAD indicator is lit to indicate the passenger air bag module is disabled. An exemption to this is when the front passenger seat is determined to be empty, and therefore indication of a deactivated passenger air bag module is not necessary. In all other cases, the PAD indicator is unlit when the passenger air bag module is enabled.When the ignition switch is in the ON position, the PAD indicator prove-out period is initiated by the RCM. The RCM briefly activates the PAD indicator to prove-out the indicator function and verify to the front occupants proper functional operation of the PAD indicator.
The PAD indicator will be lit/unlit within 1.0+0.5 seconds of a change of state from the OCS system or PAD switch.When an OCS system fault is present the SRS defaults the passenger air bag module to enabled regardless of the PAD switch status or the size of the occupant in the front outboard passenger seat. The PAD indicator will be unlit. The cost of PAD SWITCH is near to $85. and yes it’s a dealers part/but some car parts store keeps the compatible PAD SWITCH parts with them.they are not original but compatible.

Dash lights went out, so i had some fuses removed to see which one was bad. next thing i know the airbag light was on.


You just need to turn it off again. You created a false trigger of the light. You may have to have dealer do it with scan tool.


Prove Out Procedure

The restraints control module (RCM) performs the following functions:
  • signals the inflators to deploy the air bags in the event of a deployable crash.
  • monitors the air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) for faults.
  • illuminates the air bag indicator if a fault is detected.
  • flashes the air bag indicator to indicate the lamp fault code (LFC) detected.
  • communicates through the data link connector (DLC) the current or historical diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
  • signals the generic electronic module (GEM) to activate a chime if the air bag indicator is not available and another SRS fault exists.
NOTE: The safing sensor is internal to the RCM and is not repaired separately.
The RCM monitors the SRS for possible faults. If a fault is detected while the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the RCM will illuminate the air bag indicator located in the instrument cluster.
When the ignition is cycled (turned off and then on), the air bag indicator will begin its prove out sequence. During prove out the air bag indicator will illuminate for six seconds, go off for two seconds and then, if a system fault exists, flash the two-digit LFC. The air bag indicator will flash the LFC five times, then it will remain illuminated for the rest of the key cycle. The RCM will also communicate the current and historical DTCs through the DLC, using a scan tool. If the air bag indicator does not function, and the system detects a fault condition, the RCM will signal the GEM to activate an audible chime. The chime is a series of five sets of five tone bursts. If the chime is heard, the SRS and the air bag indicator require repair.
LFCs are prioritized. If two or more faults occur at the same time, the fault having the highest priority will be displayed. After that fault has been corrected, the next highest priority fault will be displayed.
The RCM includes a backup power supply. This feature provides sufficient backup power to deploy the air bags in the event that the ignition circuit is damaged in a collision before the safing and air bag sensors determine that deployment is required. The backup power supply will deplete its stored energy approximately one minute after the battery ground cable is disconnected.
Electrical System
The electrical system that supports the air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS):
  • is powered from the battery through the ignition circuit.
  • provides the electrical path from the restraints control module (RCM) to the air bag modules.
  • provides the electrical path from the RCM to the air bag indicator.
  • provides the electrical path from the RCM to the data link connector (DLC).
  • provides the electrical path from the RCM to the generic electronic module (GEM).

I had a fender bender that pushed in front bumper and blew both air bags and cruise control. i have had bumper/frame repaired and i need to know where/how many sensore need to be replaced when i replace...


you should only have to place the front crash sensor and both air bags and you may have to replace the clock spring behind the steering wheel it usually breaks after an impact i would recommend you have a qualified technician do this work

Yes, it's called a lamp fault code.

9 is not familiar to me. Call dealer service department and ask them what code means.

Airbag flashes 10 times misses a flash then repeats


Try clearing the codes & see if it returns. I do not see a code fault 10. Starts at 12.

Section 01-20B: Restraints, Passive — Supplemental Air Bag System 1995 Town Car, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis Workshop Manual DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING Diagnostic Trouble Code Clearing Procedure to Clear Diagnostic Trouble Codes from Diagnostic Monitor Non-Volatile Random Access Memory.
Normal Operation
The air bag diagnostic monitor (14B056) continually checks the air bag system for readiness. When a fault condition is detected, the DTC associated with that fault is stored in the air bag diagnostic monitor's Non-Volatile Random Access Memory (NVRAM). After writing the DTC to NVRAM, the air bag diagnostic monitor signals the fault by flashing the appropriate diagnostic trouble code on the air bag indicator. The diagnostic trouble code written to NVRAM is permanently stored in the air bag diagnostic monitor until cleared by the diagnostic trouble code clearing procedure.
  • Upon each cycle of the ignition switch (11572) , the air bag diagnostic monitor checks for diagnostic trouble codes written in NVRAM. If any diagnostic trouble codes exist in NVRAM, the air bag diagnostic monitor will then check to see if these fault conditions are still present.
  • If the conditions of the diagnostic trouble code in NVRAM are still present, then the air bag diagnostic monitor will use the air bag indicator to flash out the diagnostic trouble code number that was written in memory.
  • If the conditions of the diagnostic trouble code are not still present (indicating an intermittent or serviced fault), the air bag diagnostic monitor will use the air bag indicator to flash out a DTC which is the sum of the diagnostic trouble code in NVRAM plus 40.
Example: Due to corrosion, high resistance develops on the driver side air bag circuit. The air bag diagnostic monitor stores a diagnostic trouble code 32 in NVRAM. Upon each cycle of the ignition switch , the air bag diagnostic monitor checks the resistance of the driver air bag circuit.
  • If the resistance is still high, the air bag diagnostic monitor causes the air bag indicator to flash out a DTC 32.
  • If the resistance falls within the normal range due to service or an intermittent condition, the air bag diagnostic monitor causes DTC 72 to be flashed on the air bag indicator.
Once a fault has been serviced, the associated diagnostic trouble code may be cleared from NVRAM. Only diagnostic trouble codes that the air bag diagnostic monitor sees as repaired or intermittent may be cleared (diagnostic trouble codes 52 and above). In no circumstances can hard fault conditions (diagnostic trouble codes 45 and below) be cleared.
  1. Follow the diagnostic procedures as outlined to service the fault condition flashing on the air bag indicator.
  1. Cycle the ignition switch to OFF and then to RUN.
  1. Observe air bag indicator prove-out (six ± two seconds) followed by diagnostic trouble code (52-85) flashing completely one time.
  1. Locate the Diagnostic "Trouble Code Clear" Connector located underneath the glove compartment (06010) containing Circuits 631 (T/R) and 57 (BK).
  1. Use a jumper wire to short Circuit 631 (T/R) to Circuit 57 (BK) or to another good ground. This short must be made after the diagnostic trouble code flashes completely one time, but before the warning light stays on continuously.
  1. Hold short until air bag diagnostic monitor tone sounds (approximately five seconds).
  1. Release short on Circuit 631 (TAN/RED STRIPE) to Circuit 57 (BLACK). This short must be released within 25 seconds after the diagnostic monitor tone sounds. Diagnostic trouble code is now cleared from NVRAM. Next highest priority diagnostic trouble code stored in NVRAM (if one exists) will begin flashing.
