Question about 1989 Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

When Starting the car doesn't turn over right a way. Usually makes a long high pitched sound, I know there is plenty of power from the battery. Is this problem the starter? BTW this car is gas not diesel

The high pitched sound is most probably a worn bush in the bell housing the starter motor needs to be removed first because the starter motor doesn,t havbe an end casting the starter drive sits in a busch in the bell housing this busch is a common fault for wearing

Have the accessory drive belt checked and the automatic tensioner for that belt.

2010 Elantra, started with a high pitched sound turning left. Did that for a few days, then started when turning right. Now same noise is cooming for about 10 seconds. Not immediately on start up but

You may need to check the belts on your car's power steering section. Make sure the belts are tight and not worn out. Check for cracks on the belt and if loose, tighten it. There is also a product called Automotive belt dressing that you can spray on the belt to make it stick more easily to the pulley it is supposed to turn.

2000 Cadillac DeVille sounds like prop-plane on acceleration

Could be the serpentine belt rubbing on something, but is probably a bearing problem in the belt idler pulley. However, it could be the power steering pump, AC compressor clutch or generator. As the water pump is at the opposite end of the engine, it's probably not that.

Starter will not turn over long enough to start it kicks out replaced the stater same problem -replaced starter relay- replaced the key switch

I know your problem well. I have experienced it many times over the years with cars, trucks. jeeps and boats. In every case, replacing the starting motor fixed the problem. I am assuming here that the battery and cable connectors are good. A dead battery will give the same clicking sound. A poor or corroded battery cable connection can produce the same clicking noise. If you are trying to save money, remove and clean the battery connector on the starting motor first. Starting motors are usually located in the path of lots of road salt and other contaminants. You will probably end up replacing the starting motor but this is worth a try if cost is important. Make sure the starting motor rebuilder is reputable. Over the years, I have had dozens of starting motors rebuilt. Never once have I needed to have a relay or slave solenoid replaced. I always run a healthy battery and that has helped too.

pounding the top with the hammer help give it the extra jolt to get going, when the power from the battery should be plenty. ( I don't mean the hammer is actually pumping electricity, it moves and frees the dying fly wheel a little.). Try cleaning the battery terminals once more and make sure the connections are right and clean them as well, if that is the case, very very good chance it is your starter.

1999 Ford Ranger Front right brakes are making a grinding sound and a high pitch when i turn left, Do you know what it is ?

the grinding sound and the high pitch sound may not be related.
the grinding in the brakes means it is time to replace the brake pads / shoes and either replace or repair the discs and drums.

the high pitch noise that you are hearing while turning is more likely caused by a worn belt, low power steering fluid, or a faulty power steering pump.

Although it could be indicating something more serious like hub bearings going out, your best bet is to take it to a front end shop that offers free estimates and have them diagnose it in person.

hope this helps.

High pitch noise when turn key to start / engine not turning over

Check your battery first. Cold weather does horrible things to car batteries... if it's more of a grinding sound I would say that your starter gear is bad. I believe they call it a ring gear? I had a similar problem with a kushman scooter that I use to deliver snowcones through the neighborhoods. It has teeth that need to engage and if those teeth have been grinded down it will have a hard time engaging....
