The left latch of the hatch does not release, and, therefore, neither the hatch nor the dutch doors can be opened.

I'm not a car expert,so I apologize for the vague explanation, but this happened to me awhile back and it was a fairly simple fix. I went over to my uncle's place and we took the inside paneling off of the the hatch. Once that was off all we had to do was put the locking bar and plastic washer that had fallen out of place back into position. Neither of the pieces were broken, the plastic washer that held the bar place had just fallen off and the bar that kept the door shut had subsequently fallen out of the moving lock mechanism as well. I think the only tools we used where a screwdriver and a ratchet set. I have not had any problems with it since.

Hatch or liftgate ?
Liftgate Release
The liftgate release switch operates the liftgate latch electronically. When the switch is pressed, the SJB processes the input and releases the liftgate latch.
The doors must be unlocked electronically in order for the SJB to release the liftgate latch. When this condition is met and the SJB receives the input from the liftgate release switch, the SJB provides power to the latch release motor.

SJB - smart junction box , fords BCM - body control module .
Your best bet , take it to the dealer .

How do you open the back door (no manual)

Rear hatch is locked or unlocked with a key. (if equipped) • To open the rear hatch, insert the key into the lock, turn it to the unlock position and pull up the rear hatch by pressing the handle (DOOR). You can also lock/unlock the latch (but not release it) with the central door lock system. • If unlocked, the rear hatch can be opened by pressing the handle (DOOR) and pulling the hatch up. • To close the rear hatch, lower and push down the rear hatch firmly. Make sure that the rear hatch is securely latched.

How do I get my rear hatch door open, when you can't open it from the outside?

You can get it open in two ways: By using your key fob and remotely opening latch or by pulling inside panel on rear hatch and manually pulling lever to get latch to release. Most times when you cant get rear hatch to open normally is because cable from outside release handle to latch broke. Have cable and release mechanism inspected and replace worn or broken parts as needed.

Rear hatch on 2005 Elantra (5 door) won't open. There doesn't seem to be an emergency release anywhere. How can I get this open?

If it will not open with electric release nor key, you will have to crawl in the back and gently pry the hatch interior cover free being very careful as not to break/crack it. Look for any screws ( usually located in any handles that may be there ) and the rest is secured by clips that will release with a firm tug, Once removed enough to see the latch assembly, you can trip the latch with a screwdriver or suitable tool to release the lock and open the hatch. You must determine from there what is causing the door not to operate correctly

Safari rear door latch broken

It could be that the rod has come detached from the latch mechanism itself. I had this problem on my 94 Safari. I had to remove the panel for the hatch portion (I have the dutch doors) and release the door manually (Terrible design not having an easily accessed internal release!). Once you have the door open, you can reconnect the rod into the original socket. I recommend using some safety wire through some existing holes to pull the rod tightly into the socket, but not so tight that the rod will not move. another option is to use a clip like this one that fits around the rod and linkpoint. Either of these will keep the rod firmly in place.

99 Astro lift door latch left side inoperative

I slammed the door shut one time and the door wood not open at all. I had to take the inside door handle off and found that the cables simply came off of their post (inside the door) on the outside part of the door handle. More than likely only one cable has come off its post on your van. I hope this helps!
