Question about 1989 Pontiac Firebird

1 Answer

88 Firebird Power Failure

I have a 1988 Firebird Formula that i just put a new fuel pump in and every time i go to try and start the car the whole system dies and takes a half hour or more to come back on and the battery in the car is only a week old. Any thoughts on what might cause this to happen? Oh and the car had been sitting for a bout 10yrs be for i got it. And this problem existed before the new fuel pump was installed.

Buy a ECU from a local salvage and swap them out. It might just work. If not then you might have a short somewhere in the system causing it to shut down.

My 1988 firebird formula dont want to start and when it does you have to pump the gas til it will run this dont happen all the time9

Does this happen when the engine is at operating temp or cold. If its at operating temp then check the coolant sensor that sends it's signal to the computer. In 88 engines were known to use two sensors, one for the gauge and one for the computer. If its when engine is cold the check the pressure from the fuel pump. Make sure it is pumping at spec.

1988 firebird formula 5.0 tpi car just died replaced feul pump, relay, fuse checked wiring changed module, coil pump wont turn on unless direct power car still wont start help please out of ideas

It sounds like you may have burned out your fusable link. It's a special wire that comes off the starter solennoid and is designed to burn off in the event of an overload. DO NOT REPLACE IT WITH REGULAR WIRE, THIS IS A LEADING CAUSE OF CAR FIRES.
You will want to check for what caused the overload condition that caused the fusable link to burn out in the first place.

1991 Firebird Formula, timing shift during warm-up.

Change the coolant sensor, they are faily cheap and usually easy to get to. They are also prone to failure on the early years of fuel injection.
