Question about 2002 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

2 Answers

I have a 2002 VW Jetta. It is having transmission issues. It overrevs between 2nd and 3rd to 5k rpms, leisurely driving. It scares my wife so badly. I just read that the transmission is sealed and can only be checked at a service station. So I have the shifting issue (intermittent) and when I decelerate I hear a grinding type sound that my wife describes as ''landing gear''. Any ideas as to what the problem could be? Do I have to go to the dealer and face the exorbitant fees?

I also have what sounds like an exhaust leak, directly under the drivers seat. Any idea as to what the best way to go about fixing that would be?

Is this an auto transmission? If so, the 01m tranny in those cars are notorious for early failure, with all kinds of shifting problems. You have little choice but to take it in.

And they are sealed units, and you need a volks specific interface to verify fluid levels.

As far as the exhaust goes, take it to a shop.

Yes sir you'll have to face it , go to the dealer and face the exorbitant fees .because the second gear and the third gear needs to be replace .Your wife worries is true , so that your car will not cause big trouble in the car and accident.

My 2007 VW Jetta, transmission is shifting HARD in Reverse, from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd.No symbols or codes have shown up. What should I look for as the reason why ?

It sounds like you may have a bad synchronizer gear. Unless you know how to take down a transmission and replace it I'd visit a good reputable shop to get their opinion and estimate.

I have a 2004 Envoy slt 4wd auto....The car will shift fine from 1st to 2nd gear but rpms climb and it does't go to 3rd. I tried to maunually shift through gears, but it still doesn't get 3rd?

its most def a purely transmission issue i believe its the solenoids. have it taken to a reputable trans shop near and have them diagnose it with there speciall code reader.

How to check transmission fluid level

Most 1995-on VW models don't have a transmission fluid dipstick for checking the transmission fluid level. To fill and check the level of the VW automatic transmission fluid you have to remove a plug on the side or bottom (location depends on model and if you have an automatic vs. manual transmission) of the transmission drain pan. The factory manual refers the expensive VAG 1924 special tool for pumping the VW automatic transmission fluid into the oil pan.

The shift from 2nd to 3rd gear lags

My feeble understanding of DCT says that the computer monitors the speed of the engine, speed of the car and gas pedal input. I would suggest you test the variable resistor on the gas pedal to see if it is worn.

Vw automatic trans won't shift

The 01M and 09A automatic transmissions do not have a dipstick and procedure requires measuring and maintaining a specified ATF temperature (which is neither cold or hot, but in between) during the ATF level checking. Special Volkswagen tools are required for this operation and it is therefore recommended that ATF level checking on 01M/09A transmissions be left to an authorized VW dealer.

Transmission won't shift fron 1st, 2nd or 3rd correctly!

I'm no expert but it sounds as if you might have some moisture (water) contaminating your tranny fluid. I'd first try having it drained, flushed and refilled with fresh fluid. Preferably after it has been warmed to room temperature - -2 brrr.
