Have you tried hot tap the starter to see if that is the problem its not hsrd to try all you have to do is take some plain old speaker wire connect to positve and negative from batterie then take the positve wire and p;ace it on the nut and then thouch the starter with the neg wire make sure no one is near any parts of the motor when you do it it will spark but dont be scared to do it if the engine turns over then its not the starter you have a short in the ignition and that will need to be replaced only at last option

Check battery terminals, remove crappy grease like copper slip, use Vaseline if you must. Are the lights coming on on the dash? Do you have immobiliser?
The starter isn't too difficult to remove, a couple of wires and a couple of bolts, remember to disconnect battery! If you have no sound at all check that power is getting to the starter motor using a multi meter. Get a manual to change the starter motor if you have never done it before.

Clean all the wires from the battery to the starter and make sure they are all tight before you change the starter.Check the small wire is still connected to the solinoid at the stater motor.God luck hope that was helpfull.

Why won't it start?

There should be a clutch safety switch that prevents you from cranking the engine with the clutch engaged.
Have you checked the switch for power ?

Engine won't start

Check to make sure you are getting voltage to the small post on the starter solenoid when the key is turned to the "crank" position. if so, check all of you connections on the battery cables. If your connections are all good, your cables are in good shape, and you still do not get the starter to crank, I would have the starter removed and tested.

1978 super beetle won't crank. battery good. turn key, hear faint humming sound, nothing from engine

think you may have a faulty starter motor here ,this year vehicle will be of the pre engaged type so no seperate heavy duty solonoid unlike older cars ,i would expect a click of the solonoid and nothing if the starter has burnt out but its possible that the solonoid on top of the starter has failed but without a look myself and only a description i cannot diagnose correctly .Try some jump leads just to be sure it isnt a flat battery then check the engine earth to chassis cable then remove the starter motor and have it checked out

It won't turn over

Try this procedure:
Check the battery like this:
Turn on the headlights, then try to start the car.
If the headlights do not dim or go out, then the battery is likely ok.
Check that the battery cable plus post, goes to the starter, Minus post to a good ground, like the engine.
If wiring is ok, then look at the starter solenoid for a good connection, and proper voltage at the starter.
Problem is most likely the Solenoid's bendix gear or starting relay, Have someone bang on the starter while you try to start the car. This usually works by dislodging the bendix gear..
Hope this helps.

2005 Altima won't start, hear clicking sound coming from fuse box,key stuck in ingintion, won;t turn over, tried to jump start.

the clicking that you hear is coming from the starter relay. sounds like your ignition starter switch or ignition lock cylinder is bad.

My lexus sucksa aot of current and won't start. What can I do?

so you mean it won`t crank over or it will crank over but not start up.if it won`t crank over and it sounds like the battery is going deaf while trying to start it then it could be the starter motor as long as the battery is in good condition, and no just because the lights and radio work does not mean the battery is any good.it takes little voltage to operate these.
