Question about 1997 Acura CL

I replaced EGR valve on my 97 Acura 3.0 CL after

Check engine light came on and diagnostic indicated EGR valve. I replaced EGR valve on my 97 Acura 3.0 CL. 2 days later the check engine light came back on diagnosing EGR valve again. What do I do?
One other problem is every now and then and always when the A/C is on, my Acura seems to slip out of gear (it's automatic). If I turn the A/C off, it seems to fix the problem. But it does seem to change gears on the rough side usually upon starting out from a red light or stop sign. It kicks into gear hard.

Good news, the EGR valve for the 97 Acura was recalled. If your car is under 150,00 miles you should be eligible to get it fixed for free. I had the same problem with my 97 Acura CL 3.0. After changing the EGR valve, I found out that the vavle itself was not the problem, but rather a blocked intake manifold. Talk your local Acura dealer.

I am fixing to change my EGR valve and the piece of paper that came with the part say this:

Important Notice
Before installing this part, check the EGR valve passage in the intake manifold and clear any carbon blockage. Failure to do so will result in repeat malfuntion of the EGR valve system. Refer to a technical service manual or contact a service dealer for proper cleaning procedures.

Hope this helps.

I'm having the exact same problems with my 1997 3.0 CL...the EGR valve and the AC causing it to shift roughly. Were you able to find a solution you can share?

My check engine light came on in my 1999 Acura CL 3.0. The diagnostic indicated EGR valve was the problem as well as misfires in cylinders 2, 4, and 5. The EGR was replaced and a tune up was given. The...

The issue is not so much to do with the EGR itself but the passage ways that lead from it. Most manufacturers bleed metered amounts of exhaust gas from the EGR into the common plenum of the inlet manifold. Honda does things differently in that they use a passage way assembly to feed the exhaust gas from the EGR into each runner of the inlet assembly close to the intake valve. Over time these passage ways become blocked with sooty carbon deposits, but not all simultaneously. This means that some cylinders run as they should and others run lean with the overall effect that the engine runs unevenly and will misfire on those cylinders to which the passage ways are blocked. Two types of exhaust gas feed systems were used, one with a removable lid and one that consisted of a complete casting with blanking plugs. You will need to access this passageway assembly, it lies beneath the fuel rail and on top of the inlet manifold; the process is quite involved for the casual DIYer. The internals of the exhaust feed assembly need to be cleaned out. Those assemblies with the removable lid (bolted on with a gasket) are pretty easy to clean out with a screwdriver, brush and carb choke cleaner spray. Those with the single cast unit with blanking plugs are much more difficult. The blanking plugs need to be removed and new ones will be needed to replace them. The best way is to drill a pilot hole in the centre of each plug and then screw a heavy duty threaded, self tapping, dome topped screw. The plug can be removed by applying leverage to the screw head. To clean the passageway use a a frayed brake cable fitted in the chuck of drill. The cable can be eased in through the plug holes and along the passage ways, the rotation imparted to the cable by the drill will loosen any obstruction. Spray liberally with carb. choke cleaner and wipe clean. Fit the new blanking plugs and tap home. Replace all the fuel rail assemble etc and the engine should be good for another 100k, no more EGR and no more misfire and no more speed restriction. Note the safe-home mode imposed by the ECU on the engine is due to the knock sensors detecting the misfire events. It is just a safety precaution to prevent any damage and will be lifted when the computer is cleared.

97 ACURA 3.O L STALLS ALL THE TIME

Could be the ignition switch, if the green key light is flashing then the issue is the switch. There was a recall issued for the ignition switch for this car back in 03 for the 97 to 99 Acura CL.

My check engine lights stays on

Hi, the best thing at at his point is to get a diagnostic review by using a diagnostic computer at the local dealership or garage. Once your car has been diagnosed, you will be able to reset the cpu and the light will go off. its probably just an O2 sensor or egr valve needed.

Can the EGR valve on a 1997 Acura CL 2.2 be cleaned?

Sometimes you can remove them and clean the carbon build up off of them and lubricate it before you reinstall it. Make sure you can find a new gasket before you take it off. Usually you ruin the gasket removing the EGR. Good luck. Please rate me so I know how I'm doing. Thanks.
