Question about 1998 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

AC only works on max, but blows hot air in all other settings

I have a 1998 Ford Explorer Sport, (that's the 2 door model) I have double checked all fuses, and checked my air filter, but don't know where else to look. Can anyone help me?

After checking other resources, I found the problem. The temperature blend door is broken. I also found a fix that I can afford. This is a BIG problem in 1997 to 2000 Ford Explorers. If it has been a safety problem, there would have been a recall, but it's comfort, not safety.

SOURCE: 1999 ford explorer sport ac

CHECK THE CLUTCH CYCLE SWITCH.ALSO CALLED THE HI PRESSURE SWITCH IT IS LOCATED ON THE RECEIVER DRYER. YOU WILL FIND IT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE NEAR THE FIREWALL. THE A/C LINES RUN TO IT. IT IS A CYLINDER TYPE CANISTER. THE SWITCH HAS A 2 WIRE PLUG PULL THE PLUG OFF THE SWITCH AND JUMP IT WITH A PAPER CLIP OR PIECE OF WIRE. IT WILL FOOL THE SYSTEM INTO THINKING THE SWITCH IS GOOD THE TRY THE A/C IF IT KICKS ON REPLACE THE SWITCH.THOSE ARE COMMON PROBLEMS AND CHEAP AND EASY TO FIX..

SOURCE: Temperature Control not working on 1999 Ford Explorer

Sounds like your temperature actuator is not moving or your temp door is broken. On max a-c ,coolant is shut off to your heater core allowing only cold air in.

SOURCE: 1998 ford ranger ac only works below 45 mph blows hot at higher

I would say that this problem is caused be a vaccum leak. Ford was known for using vaccum in their heat/ac systems....and you loose vaccum as you press the accellerator.

I had this issue with a Grand Marquis....and was a pain to find the leak.

You really need to look over all the vaccum lines that run under the dash.

1997 ford explorer xlt. max ac works fine but when i switch to normal ac or change vent control it blows out heated air. How do i check or repair?

The blend door actuator is probably bad in it causing the warm air to blow out instead of cold air. It is behind the dash.

It may take several hours for a technician to get at it and replace the parts required for it to work again.

My ac was working on max air , it began to blow warm air intermidatly, I added coolant and it is ayt 52psi the recommended. it is blowing hot aitr like the heater is on.

The pressure switch is stuck open, You can try unplugging it for a few minutes with the ac turned on to reset it,If that doesn't work it may need replaced.

When i turn on ac it works on max ac not on ac

You have a blend door actuator motor that is not working, they are hard to get to,the dash has to be removed, and pulled back toward the seats to access the actuator motor.

There is a Flap on heater box and on some of those it is motor controlled, but it sounds like the flap is not switching back and forth

97 Ford Econoline air conditioning and vent settings blowing hot

I know from experience that if the coolant is to low ( not just the freon levels in the compresor but the antifreeze/coolant level as well) the AC system will not cool and will blow hot. Check the coolant Antifreeze and freon levels, even with the Coolant being a little low my 1998 Ford E150 Van will blow hot. After you have ruled out of these possibilities and the chance it is the thermostat most likely the problem is what Ford calls the "Flap" it controls the air flow through the vent system when you switch from Heat to AC. When the Flap is working it closes off one systems air flow so as to not interfere with the current climate selection.
