Question about 2001 Volvo S40

1 Answer

I have a 2001 Volvo S40 Turbo. Several months ago, My cars turbo didnt seem to be working. and the car was spitting and sputtering. I had the codes checked and found a misfire on Cyl 1 and 2. Or possible bad oxygen sensor. I changed out the coil packs, spark plugs, wires and the oxygen sensor. Cleared the code and it seemed to be better. A few minutes later, the check engine came back on. The spitting and sputering returned. Well, I drove it like that for a long time. I took it into a garage and was told they think I have a head gasket problem because when I put it under a load, it spits and sputters. They think it was sucking in water into the engine. Well, I drove it like that and one day my waterpump went out. Didnt take but a few seconds my head was warped. The engine was smoking and running very rough. I had it towed to a garage. They replced the following parts... Head gasket Valve seals plugs Ignition coil thermostat timing belt spring shims water pump valve job pressure check bake head adjust valves I stopped by when it was together and found that the car was running much better but the check engine light was still on and the car was shooting out white smoke. It was also dying at idol. He said that he thought it was the cam pully. He would replace it at no labor charge. The part was 150.00. I had him do it. When I picked the car up, the check engine light was still on. He said the codes was reading misfire cyl 1 and 2. Also it is still smoking white smoke. He said that it isnt misfireing he didnt know why it was saying that. The smoke seems to be worse it idol when I let off of the gas. The turbo doesnt seem to be working at all. I will have to say the car does seem to be running very well except the smoke and turbo not working. I am out alot of money and I am getting to my end. DO you have any suggestions?

Replace the mass air flow meter.Thats the sort of problem you will get when its faulty. And this should be changed every 90.000.I think your fuel consumption has gone up aswell due to the air flow meter.hope that was helpfull.Good luck.

SOURCE: 2001 Volvo s40 oil leaking in turbo, smokes white

Water in combustion chamber makes white smoke--suspect that the head gasket is leaking water into the chamber. If oil leaking around turbo, it may have a bad bearing and bad oil seal. Check waste gate valve and control.

If diesel, it could be dodgy glow plug(s). Had a similar problem with my s40 and new glow plugs solved it!

Hello.I got my Volvo s40 2002.Its suppost to have a turbo build-in.But I cannot feel the difference, basically when is turbo starts working? Thanks!

The S 40 came with different size and spec engines and they were not all Turbo charged versions. The choice of engines available depends on which country you are in.

The turbocharger is driven by the engine's exhaust system and runs continuously but has minimal affect at low engine RPM. Unless the turbo has failed, you should feel the turbo effect kick in when you accelerate hard but there will be a brief lag .

If you have the turbo engine fitted to your 2002 model S40 you will have a " 1.9T " badge on the rear of your car under the S40 badge. The "T" designates Turbo. An engine designator badge without a "T" indicates it is not turbocharged.

The turbochargers on these S40 models will fail (especially if the car has done a lot of miles) so you should have your car examined if you feel the turbo is not functioning.

2001 Volvo S40 1.9T - oil leaking into turbo

It's very common for the turbo return line seal to leak. That is what I would check first, when it leaks, it will spray oil all over the turbo lines and the rear of the engine.

2001 s40 volvo diesel .. turbo oil leak ??

Could be the Turbo oil return pipe seal, its a cheap about $10 but you need to get to the pipe.
Its just a bit tricky to reach and you will need the gasket to go on the other end of the pipe when you take it off.
Its a well know fault check the Volvo Forums web site.
