Additional info: If you are re-using the universals, be sure to get out the grease gun and lube them up.

How do I decide if it's the drive shaft or the CV joint?

It is easier to change the whole half shaft than it is to change just the CV joint.

From what you have described, no. A drive-shaft would damage a transmission if it was too long. It would be quite the rookie mistake. I know that if your drive-shaft needed repair then the dealership would send the drive-shaft out to a drive-shaft shop The Dealership doesn't have their own balancing machine. The machine shop would replace the u-joints and then balance the drive-shaft. If the machinist had to make up a new drive-shaft because the original was damaged. It would have been then that if there was a mistake made in the drive-shafts length, it was made there. I find it hard to believe but it isn't impossible. My honest opinion is that it is a coincidence. If I can answer any questions please write back, good luck.

You have front wheel drive & CV Joints,
not U-Joints ,is that not correct

CV Drive Axles in front wheel drive vehicles
are just replaced as a complete axle assy

Noise is coming from the front part of the drive shaft on my 2007 Passat 3.6 4motion. My dealer is suggesting to change the whole part of the drive shaft, asking $1,900 just for the parts. Labor charge...

Find a drive shaft shop that repairs & balances them

They are like machine shops

They are honest & will give you a straight answer

Ask a trans shop who they use

Do not get into any discussion about anything, at the trans
shop, just where the drive shaft place is

I am changing the tranny, I cant get the drive shaft out. Does it slide out of transfer case like drive shafts on a regular tranny does

Have you not looked over the transfer end of the shaft.
It will have to be unbolted, pretty obvious.

Transmission leaking through drive shaft

the rear seal on the tail shaft must have gotten damaged when you removed the shaft. it is available at any good parts store, easy to change. you have to pull the drive shaft back out, then you can use a small hook / prybar to pull the seal out, then tap the new one into place. pay close attention to the install height of the old seal before you remove it, so you know how far to drive the new seal in. good luck!

Rattling sound in drive shaft for 2003 GMC Sierra

Not sure what  you mean by rattling. If it is your drive shaft it could only be a worn U joint os just change the front and rear U joint unless you bent the drive shaft, but the shop should be able to tell you. The only other thing that would rattle under the truck would be the heat sheild for the Catalytic converter and muffler. Good luck and hope this helps
