SOURCE: how to change rear air suspension on 1999 ford

The air suspension can be a tricky thing to mess with. When we were looking to replace just one of the rear bags it was going to be costly. My husband did some checking around online and found Strutmasters.com.
They offered great products at a great price and we were very pleased with the outcome of the replacement of the non air system. If you are replacing the entire system you are looking at a pretty penny. I would check Strutmasters out before you replace the air on your Expedition.

SOURCE: Noises in the front end suspension/brakes

I don't belive the axles are your major problem or concern. Sounds as though the diff bearing is going out, it's a fairly common problem. If your trans is the 604 (common name) a slight whine is normal from the transfer gears on that side you will also hear a racheting type noise from the solenoid block when it chamges gears. Get under vehicle and grad cv axle inboard joint, try to move it up and down, some movement is normal but should not be alot. You didn't mention how trans works?

If this vehicle has an independent rear suspension /rear wheel drive then the click noise most likely will be from a failing cv joint of the axle shaft.

I have a banging under my ford windstar paid 2000 for van have put 10000 into it have always have fords love them but this problem mechanics cant figure it out......driving me crazy

It could be any one of a number of things:-
Exhaust system
Anti roll bar on front suspension
Stabilising arms
gear linkages
Wishbone joints
ball joints
rear suspension linkages
shock absorbers
engine or gearbox mounts.
flat spots on wheels

Try figure out if the noise only happens under certain circumstances like road surfaces or wheel speeds or engine speeds, and try narrow down the source.

I had a Ford Winstar van that had this problem. There is an acceleration switch near the firewall on the passenger side that needs replacing. Unless you're very good under the hood, see a mechanic as it's a totall B**ch to get to the darn thing!

Rear suspension left side makes a knocking sound while driving

There are a few suspension parts that can cause knocking noises. Such as swar bar loose, strut mounts going bad. You should really have a shop do a complete suspension check.
