Solution #1 is WRONG. I own a 1990 F350 XLT Lariat dually. The axles DO NOT have to be pulled out on this truck. I did mine yesterday and if u listen to the directions on #2 you'll be fine

you need a special 4 point socked to remove & reinstall the bearing retainer locking ring.
any good parts shop can sell you one.
note: reinstallation & bearing pre-loading is done with the same socket & a torque wrench.
buy the Haynes manual for your make & model vehicle, all the knowledge you need is in there.
