SOURCE: '89 dodge dakota manual transmission A535 will not
Most likely solution is the gear selector fork in the transmission has broken and is no longer engaging the gears.
Repair requires transmission removal and partial overhaul.
Testimonial: "good diagnosis. right on the money"
SOURCE: E40d trans will not shift into 3rd or 4th gear, only rev. 1+2
check or replace your thottle position sensor tps that trans needs to know where the throttle is to shift if it is bad it will do as you say wont shift to third
another telltale is it will act like it goes into lockup when shifting into reverse and stall the engine

Are you check trans fluid levels? Sound like a problem with the torque converter or internal valve body solenoids clugged. I suggest check with your technician before to buy or think in replacement parts.
Hope this helps.

There are several things that could cause that.
> Replacement transmission not equipped with overdrive
> Overdrive solenoid in replacement transmission defective
> Overdrive control circuits damaged or loose pins or connections.
> Gear shift linkage or cable out of adjustment
> Transmission range sensor malfunction or out of adjustment
Since you have a computer-controlled transmission, it would be better to ask the onboard computer that question....you will probably get a much more definitive answer.
