Question about 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier

I have changed my thermastat, but my car keeps getting hot if its just idling or i am driving slow. The fan does not seem to be kicking on. is it a relay or the fan?

My car has the same problem, car get hot when driving slow or stop traffic. Check fuse #40 and both relay it works and rad fan work perfect. Should i check the temperature sensor ecu ?

Hi my name is mike ! when your just idling your fan should come on after a few minutes ,if the temp is going up but no fan kick on then you have a blown fuse to the fan or a relay not working ,or a bad fan possibly .hope this helps ,let me know if you have more questions

I have a 2005 grand prix gt temp guage reads normal and heat is on and warm when start driving heat gets colder or if i change to defrost its cold air doeasnt stay hot car doesnt over heat though changed...


The heating coil is probably getting plugged up. You may have heat at idle or slow speeds, but once you get going, there is not enough coolant going through it to stay warm. Get the system flushed or replace the heating coil.

Driving round town this is not an issue as the car does not overheat drive for 20 miles down the motorway and over heats when you get off levels are checked prior to trip and all seem fine i have already...


Sounds like your electric fan is not kicking in when the engine is hot and there is no ram air going through the radiator. Warm up the car and let it idle stationary, watching the temp. gauge and look to see if the fan kicks in when the temp gauge reaches about the 3/4 mark. If it does not there is a problem with the thermostatic switch or its relay.

How do I change a thermostat in a 2001 New Beatle VW


First you should drain the antifreez by opening the drain plug located by the lower radiator hose. Then take the upper radiator hose off. Then take the 2 bolts out that hold the housing on. Remove the housng and there is your thermastat. Accordind to VW they want you to put antifreeze on the o-ring I use RTV a little extra help sealing just don't put a lot on. The book says to put thermastat in housing and turn 1/4 turn to right. I'm not sure why but thats what it says. TIP If you close the drain plug now and put as much antifreeze in as you can makes it easyer to get air pockets out later. Mount your therrmostast housing back to block and tighten bolts. Again put as much antifreeze in that you can them put upper radiator hose back on. Again put as much antifreeze in that you can. Now come the hard part sometimes getting all the air out of the cooling system. Put the radiator cap on but loose run the engine till the cooling fan kicks on but keep checking the coolant level. WARNING ANTIFREEZE WILL GET ABOVE 200 DEGREES
both upper and lower radiator hoses should be hot and radiator full. If both hoses aren't hot you have an air pocket that you have to get out. To do this run the engine a couple minutes after the fan kicks on then turn engine off for 5 or 10 minutes and start over keep doing this till both hoses get hot and the air the fan is blowing is hot. Once this is doe yout ready to go. I hose off any antifreeze that got one car so if you see antifreeze under car you know something is leaking and not what was spilled. 254a047.pnga06a9b1.png

Fan doesn't run while in idle and begins to over heat until I start driving agin then it cools back down to normal. Also the fan runs when engine is off and drains the battery.


The fan is only supposed to come on when there is excess heat .. in normal driving conditions it doesn't start. When you start your car in the morning the fan won't come on because the engine is cold.

With a hot engine - and it depends how hot the engine is - the fan will only kick in to prevent overheating. In heavy slow moving traffic or a traffic jam, the fan will kick in if needed.

The air flow through the radiator is usually sufficient -in normal driving conditions - to cool the engine.

When you park up and the car has a hot engine, the fan will kick in. This is perfectly normal. It is caused by a surge of hot coolant triggering the fan sensor. Perfectly normal.

The fan then should cut out after a while .. maybe 2-3 minutes at the most. If the fan runs continuously that suggests a fault in the temperature sensor switch.

Next time - wait by the car and see how long it takes for the fan to quit after you have parked up. It should stop of its own accord after a couple of minutes.

If the fan cuts off after a short while, and your battery is becoming drained, that's probably a battery or alternator fault.

Remember: when you start the car the fan won't kick in at idle speed because the engine is COLD, and there is no reason for the fan to start up ..
The fan WILL kick in for a couple of minutes after you have parked the vehicle and the engine is hot

When idling my jeep overheats. The cooling fan is running and it speeds up when temperature goes up. The temperature gets close to 260 degrees and the engine tries to stall. when I start moving it cools...


At idling speed an engine does build up a lot of heat and the cooling fan will kick in. In slow moving traffic or traffic jams the temperature gauge can touch the red - particularly on hot days. The reason it cools down when you start moving is because of the air flow through the radiator.

Presumably there are no leaks from the cooling system otherwise you would have mentioned it. In normal circumstances the fan will not be running as you are driving at speed, as the air-flow through the radiator is sufficient to cool things. The fan only kicks in to get rid of excess heat - and this usually occurs at idling speed or after you have parked the car.

If the fan is running all the time as you drive, this points to either a fault in the fan switch, or the car is running too hot. presumably in normal driving the fan isn't running and the temperature gauge reads normal?

It is common - in stationary traffic many cars overheat (particularly big engined models) try to stall and 'cut out'. Restarting can be difficult until the engine cools down.

Is your car overheating in normal driving conditions or just at idle speed? Overheating in normal driving conditions can be caused by things like a failing water pump, blocked radiator, collapsed hose, faulty thermostat or, in the worst case scenario, cylinder head problems.

Overheating at idling speed is 'common'. Check your coolant level. If your car isn't using/losing coolant then there probably is no major problem. You can flush out the cooling system and refill with new coolant - and also check your radiator. Are the cooling fins crumbling with age? Or maybe they're partly clogged with insects and debris from the road? A blast with a hosepipe wil sort that out ..

The question is how much does your car overheat in normal driving? If it doesn't .. it appears as though you have nothing to worry about as such. Most cars have 2 speed fans... the 2nd faster stage kicks in at some point dependant on engine temperature. Perfectly normal.

replace the thermostat just to be safe. not to do so is what i call to gag on a nat and swallow a hog. then pressure check the cooling system to make sure it is not making pressure above what is on the radiator cap. if it is you may have a blown head gasket. make sure yer not gettin antifreeze in the oil.

Car running hot


The first thing that I would check would be the level of the coolant. This is VERY important. Other things to look into would be a clogged radiator or a malfunctioning water pump. It would more than likely be one of the first two.

My Jeep overheats while sitting idle. When I drive, the gauge goes down quickly. I have had thermostat and fan changed. I have also had the radiator flushed. What can it be?


we have a 2003 and it did the very same thing . Its called cooling fan relay it costs about 60.00 and is located behind the headlight assembly . not very hard to fix if you know anything about cars .

Nissan 2000 ac hot when idle


the a/c condenser has a fan in front ( there is actually 2 fans if you sit on the car it will be fan on right side ) if this fan does not
come on immediately when you are parked and engine in idle
there is a problem with power to it, or motor failure. If you drive it
on the highway and a/c operates fine that's because air is circulating though condenser (thats what the fan is supposed to do at idle or slow traffic)
