Question about Nissan Maxima

Had transmission rebuild about 6 mos. ago. it now sometimes will not go into top gear. if i stop and and let rest awhile it then runs fine for awhile- seems to happen when it heats up. take it to trans. people and they say nothing wrong with it. of course if works fine when they drive it for a short distance. i can sometimes get it the shift by floor boarding it. i want to get it repaire before it gets worse. car has 106.000 miles on it runs great.

    it is no good to leave my car there for a long time they will just say nothing is wrong and then start charging me storage. as i said it does not happen all the time just on and off. i need the car.by the time i went thru. the state it would have comb webs over it. i dont mine paying a new mech. if i could just fine one that could tell me whats wrong

You have a warrenty on this. Have it towed to them and do a warrenty claim. Do not take the car back till the trans is actully worked on. If they refuse you'l have to file a complaint with your stated auto industry. This is you only option other than waiting till it dies which may not happen til after the warrenty is done

    You have a warrenty, If they refuse to to do anything file a complaint. Alot of times you have to leave a car for weeks for them to drive an a daily bases till they experience. Your only other option if you don't this is to wait till your left stranded when the trans decides not go into gear. Your warrenty way be void at this time. Their is a chance when they rebuilt they did'nt get all the debree out and something is causing a valve to stick. Maybe a trans fluid service could help.

There is one cheat, and so far it works for me! Get some oil thickener, a lower grade oil, and remove thhe drain plug, drain off some oil about 50%, put the lower grade oil in and that will aid some viscosity when you are changing into top gear. You will find the gear shift is stiffer, but it will stop any grinds, bumps and clunks. My advise ( and I shoulndn't say this) is get rid of it by the 120.000ml and say nothing! I know it works, it's a cheat a lot of G'box refurbs stations use! You won't be the first and won't be the last that has spent good money on a re-build, and all the have done is shine it up and put it back in with new gear oil.. If you want to keep the car, keep your eyes out for a smashed /damaged one at the wrecking yards with lower miles than yours, and buy it. Then pay a mate to try and to ghange it yourself, itst easy, a few bolte, and remove the drive shaft, put in the new box, bolt up, and away you go. DON'T BELEIVE RE-BUILIDS GUARENTEE. TELL THEM YOU WANT A NEW BOX, OR A REFURB AT THE LEAT IF YOU ARE STILL WITIN WARANTEE! Best Wishes, let me know how you got on, Regards, Dave.

Transmission has to be manually shifted. Downshifts on its own, and i can take off in 1st but only at very slow speed. 2nd and 3rd gear seem fine other than manually shifting.


u need a scan using factory or vehicle specific gear--values of components will be diplayd so an xperiencd tech can decyfr--littl code readers dont du it---w age of car certain sensors etc need replacin-believe that trans is electric controled--dont rplace any parts til uve isolated issue----------also go to magicmechanic online and checout the napa library on that model

94 ford ranger manual transmission goes into first gear and reverse just fine let off the clutch and the truck wont move.


part of a clutch job is removing the gearlever make sure the lever is secured properly and selects the gear correctly.
Orherwise your symptoms sound like a collapsed pressure plate or broken release bearing either defective part or something done wrong during installation of clutch

I suspect transmission oil drain back to oil pan during night.
if you want to confirm.
engine stop take oil level place a mark on dipstick then let it sit overnight. in the morning take oil level if it raise then oil have to charge the torque converter you hear a cavity front pump noise.
when hot take oil level engine hot in park have to be at top of oil level

Automatic Transmission shifts hard from first to second gear. Is it the shift solenoid?


Put some transmission conditioner in and run for awhile, could be a sticking spool in the valve body from shellac buildup.

When put in reverse the tranny slips before it starts to back up. fluid levels are all good. all other gears are fine. any idea what it could be?


It could be a transmission filter but if replacing that doesnot work then your transmission is going out maybe slowly but surely and they can go out one gear at a time.
