Quite possibly a wiring problem then where one or more of them could be old, brittle and not making good contact at any of the plugs.Best way to find the problem and easiest way is with a multimeter

Headlights stopped working

I think it's either the headlight switch or the dimmer switch. I would get a manual on your car. Head light switch you have to take apart the colum to replace it.

High beam headlights stuck on replaced switch same problem

It can be issue with headlight switch, but as its already been replaced.Try disconnecting high beam headlight wiring from headlight assembly and reconnect direct external wire from headlight switch to headlight assembly, then by switch see if headlight is getting off and turning on or not.

Both headlights stopped working in my 86 ford bronco xlt

In almost every case this is caused by a overheated and damaged headlight switch and the large connector that goes to it, both parts are cheap and you can get the switch and the repair connector from any NAPA or Carquest auto parts store. The headlight connector and switch must be done as one repair or the new headlight switch will quickly stop working again due to a poor connection of the connector. When the connector is replaced it must be soldered the wiring harness and shrink tube for insulation of the connection, ONLY DO ONE WIRE AT A TIME.

I have a 2004 GMC Envoy XL....My headlights were working ok when they wanted to....I could be driving down the street and they would just go off the manaul switch doesnt make them come on either usually...

Okay, lets start with the sensor, the sensor fell inside the dash which means its in a dark place which makes it think it dark out and its turning on the headlight all the time, the first thing to check is the headlight bulbs as they may have gone bad being on all the time. i would replace them anyway if you have not already. my next step even if the light are woriking now is to get the sensor out of the inside of the dash, with sensor out and back in it spot try to control the lights manually and if they dont work then switch should be replaced.

again check the bulbs first.another thing , try turning on the headlight with the switch and try to turn on the highbeam to see ifthey come on.if they do then check the bulbs and als the bulb sockets as they are pron to burning and melting the plastic causing a bad connection, this i have seen make headlight turn on and off as you are driving, the switch will also cause this until it burns out.

let reveiw. First check the bulbs. hope this is helpful.

2001 grand caravan low beam light not working. i chang bulb already i check fuse already.

Hi Every single time I have had a failure of low beam in a headlight without failure of high beam, it has been because the lamp bulb or halogen lamp module has reached the end of its serviceable life, not because of any wiring problems. Low beam burns out first because it is on the most. If low beam is lost simultaneously in both headlights, I would check fuse first, then the headlight switch. If low beam is lost on one side only, it is almost always going to be due to the bulb or lamp module needing to be replaced. In that case, replace them in both headlights because the other one will be going kaput in short order, as well. Also if you already replaced the fuse and bulb check the headlight dimmer control switch.
Thanks for using Fixya.

1997 VW Jetta, at the same time, low beam headlights, wind sheild wipers and heater blower stopped working. However if I hold the headlight bright lever in the flash position everything works, intill I...

Unless you have done this already, replace your headlight switch. These are the steps for this task:

Removal & Installation
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. The headlight switch is held in place with spring clips or plastic barbs. The switch can be removed by carefully prying it out of the instrument panel. On Golf and Jetta, pry the top and bottom of the switch. On Cabriolet, pry the left and right sides.
  3. Disconnect the wiring and remove the switch.
  4. Installation is the reverse of removal.

If you HAVE done this already, was there any change in the fuction of the headlights, wipers, or blower?

Also, check your fuses...

Fuses are located either in the engine compartment or passenger compartment fuse and relay panels. If a fuse blows, a single component or single circuit will not function properly.

  1. Remove the fuse or relay box cover.
  2. Inspect the fuses to determine which is faulty.
  3. Unplug and discard the fuse.
  4. Inspect the box terminals and clean if corroded. If any terminals are damaged, replace the terminals.
  5. Plug in a new fuse of the same amperage rating.
Please let me know what you find. We need to get your car fixed!

If the tail lights and the dash lights stopped working and the tail light and the panel lighting fuses are both o.k. and you can find no other blown fuses then the problem is most likely the headlight switch.

Headlights Not Working, Brights and Turn Signals Work

This is cuased by the multifuntion switch that is located on the steering column. It is the swith with the headlight dimmers on it.

You just need to remove the steering column bezels and replace the multifunction switch.
