Question about 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis
Mercury Grand Marquis LS 1999 Model [Mfg. Date 9/1998], 4.6L, V8
Normally, when then engine is cranked & running (or simply switched to ''run''), the rear air suspension compressor operates for about 15-20 seconds, as it inflates the air bags, then shuts off. Last week, the comppressor regularly began to run for a full minute or-so & then the ''Check Air Suspension'' warning would come on. I didn't know how to diagnose the problem, and the place I took it to said tha no one can, except for the (damned) dealership. Seems the 2 obvious answers are that an air bag has a leak OR the compressor's going-out (she's got 192,500 miles +/- on her)-- I just don't know which is the problem (or is it something else???)
I hear no air leaks , when I turn the eng off, after the compressor has run but, the rear only raises about 1/2 - 3/4 o' the way up.
Probably compressor... don't ya' think (???)-- Think it's worth installing ''new'' (junkyard) compressor, just to see, since I gear no leaks, and it seems to be holding air-- at least that 1/2 - 1/3 anyway(?)
--Any diagnostic &/or removal/installation tips?
Try calling several Autozone stores and see if the have a scanner for the air suspension.
There are height adjustment sensors under the car and it may be that a sensor got smashed or failed. I remember reading this tech stuff about 20 years ago for a 1988 LSC. As long as the air is not leaking and the compressor runs its a plus.
I always recommend going to a Salvage yard and asking about the parts and asking if I can look at where the parts go. That way you are not tearing up your car trying to do something you don't have tools for.
