You will need a meter or a test light to check the starter. You will have a big wire cable going from the battery to the starter that always has 12 volts positve at it. The smaller wire will have 12 positive when the ignition key is turned to "start." If you have both of these at the starter, your starter is bad.

New Battery/starter and still wont crank.

car wont crank or car wont start? I would say your battery cables are bad,, acid gets in from battery and erodes internal cable parts... need a Meter to check it out.. put the meter on battery while someone tries to start it, if the voltage drops from 13.5 to 10 then it is trying to turn over, I always have the new starters tester before I leave a store, they are remanufactured in Malaysa and they use old parts in most of them..

You should be able to jumper the relay terminals and bypass it to find out.

if all you heard is a click when turning your key and after a few try's it will crank then the starter contacts are worn out, you can replace them easy or just get a new not rebuild starter. one more thing put a volt meter on your battery and crank your engine if voltage drops below 10.5 v battery may be at fault or starter is drawing to much current.

MY 2002 4runner won't start. It makes a clicking

I am working on my mother-in-law's 2002 4Runner right now. The problem is a common one for Toyota starters and is likely due to worn contacts in the starter itself. When you engage the starter by turning the key, the worn contacts are preventing enough current from getting to the starter bendix (this is the rod that engages the flywheel and makes the engine turn over. you can hear the starter spinning, but the gear on the starter bendix is not engaged with the flywheel. If you can remove the starter, it is likely you can buy new contacts from Toyota, or your local parts store. Or you can buy a new/refurbished starter from your parts store for less than $200 and you will get money back for giving them your old starter. The tricky part is getting the starter out, which is what I am working on right now.

No power At all

You have something draining power from the battery when your car isnt running. The air ride and fan can both run, but shouldnt kill the battery (and you'd hear them both).
Hearing you say it didnt turn over one minute later leads me to believe its a starter OR starter solenoid problem. I cant remember on these cars if its on the starter or not (if its not youll have a short red battery cable running to it, mounted on the firewall).
Wearing safety glasses, use a screwdriver to connect the terminal that the red (+) battery cable is connected to on the solenoid, to the smaller screw-like terminal with a wire plugged on to it (disconnect that wire, thats the ignition power). Get ready to jump, it will startle you. The car SHOULD crank if you have a good battery and starter and solenoid.
Battery charged and no crank = bad solenoid or starter Battery charged and no crank with key but cranks every time with the screwdriver = bad solenoid Screwdriver method, you hear a click and the other big cable reads 12+ volts between it and ground = bad starter
The solenoid is smaller than a soda can but bigger than a shotglass. It should have a red battery cable on one side, and on the other has the same gauge wire which goes to the starter. Two small terminals, one not used probably and one with the red push-on plug (usually red).
Just to be sure, be certain your battery terminals are tight, and if they are the ones that clamp on to the wire, that those connections are tight too. You shouldnt be able to turn the cable on the batetry post by hand.
CAREFUL not to touch any tools between the battery cable and any metal or ground; you WILL weld it or your battery could explode from the hydrogen fumes.
See my other post about these cars blowing alternators with dead batteries. All MKVIIIs should have new and oversized batteries, replace them every 2 years or count on an alternator replacement. Buy a rebuild from a specialty shop or a dealer, do NOT get one from a chain store, they wont last.

Toyota 4runner wil not start

Check the Spark plugs, starter, or the battery wires. It depends on if it is trying to turn over or if its not doing anything at all. If its trying to turn over then its most likely your starter or spark plugs or could simply be its getting too much air due to a leak. If Its not doing anything at all no clicking nothing then its probably a problem with the battery wires. If its just making a clicking noise then its yoru starter.
