Question about 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

1993 Grand Jeep Cherokee has fluctuating High emissions

1993 Grand Jeep Cherokee, 4.0 L engine, 6 cyl, auto transmission, with California registration must pass the smog test. All categories EXCEPT OZ2 at 15 mpg pass. The 1st test measured 719 (MAX is 501). I replaced the gas cap, the PCV valve hose, added a bottle of "Guaranteed To Pass" and added Lucas Fuel Cleaner to 3 tanks of gas. The second test 3 wks later was HIGHER, measured 747. The next day I put in a 1/2 tank of Prem (91 Octane) and another bottle of "Guaranteed to Pass". This time the emmissions were alot LOWER, measured 588 (almost passing) so, I put in 2 more bottles of the "Guaranteed to Pass" and had it tested again. Emissions went HIGHER, measuring 685 over 701. Why?

Everthing effects the reading. pedal position, rpm load engine temp. air temp. all that stuff you added was just a waste of time and money. What you should of done wa diagnosed it correctly so your not cheating an emission test. Since barley failed the first time I would of recommended a tunup if not done in 40,000 miles. I would have looked at the scanner data to see if the inputs were correct. Iwould have serviced the oil if its been awhile. If everything checked out i would of recommended a catalytic converter. But there are 3 test to determine if the cat is dead we do first. If your car was barley failing and you needed a tunup and the cat was still good the need for a tuneup could toast the cat within a couple weeks.

Testimonial: "Assessment was correct. Needed the catalytic converter replaced."

1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee - V6 engine with a Automatic 4-speed Transmission. Unit will not shift out of 1-2 speed into 3-4 gear. I have checked shift linkage - is OK & TV linkage OK. Is there a vacuum...

The only thing that you can do is check the trans fluid.Start car,run it through all gears and end in neutral.Handbrake on.Now check the trans fluid level.Make sure engine is warm.If needed add fluid. If this is not the problem,a tranny expert is the go.There is not a lot anyone can do with an auto trans at home.Hope this helps
