Depends on the model car.

lots of times, the condition you describe is a crankshaft position sensor, particularly if the car starts after a couple of hours of sitting.

If it has a timeing sensor on a device that looks like a distributer in older cars it should be changed also. It and the crank sensor share info in order to work properly.

Starterrelay 2007 chryslermagnum engine will not turn over

turn over means , ZERO !
does the starter turn over or does the crank shaft turn over.?
see that gross ambiguity?
engines CRANK , the starter can spin fast and the crankshaft sits still.
then starts (EFI does this part, spark and fuel)
then sustain start called running. (EFI keeps to so...)
its 3 steps, which does yours fail. no crank>?

if confused, look at the crank shaft damper pulley.
you can see the actually crank spin .
most folks know the sound of cranking is good. a very unique sound.

no crank
no start
stalls after starting

first remove the plugs and try to turn the engine by hand(slowly), if the engine locks stop, remove valve covers and check each valve keeper, i think you may have dropped one , if not a nut or washer may have found its way into the piston chamber

I have a 05 ford diesel and it will crank hard but will not start. where do i start looking for the problem.

Most crank/no starts are faults in the high pressure oil system. Does it try to run at all? If it sounds like it wants to catch and start it could be the FICM or combustion leaking from one or more injectors into the fuel system. That is taking for granted that someone didn't put gasoline into your fuel tank?

My 1997 chevy cavalier wont start.its getting spark and fuel.but wont fire it has a 2.2 ecotec.

Sounds like cam belt has snapped. If it broke while starting, could be cheap fix...new belt. Worst case: cylinder head off for overhaul...bent valves / pistons replaced.
