HELP!!! CAVALIER WON'T SHIFT! LEAVING FOR PARRIS ISLAND IN 4 DAYS

When I accelerate my car makes this whining noise, it used to be faint but now its gotten loud and it struggles to shift when it hits around 25mph. The car lurches if it does shift but otherwise the engine revs real loud (my model doesn't have a tach but I suspect its almost over-revving) and it tries to shift and eventually does but its terrible. I can get up to speed but it is an incredible struggle. The whine is very loud & pronounced. When I accelerate my car makes this whining noise, it used to be faint but now its gotten loud and it struggles to shift when it hits around 25mph. Pop your hood, and check all of the rubber hoses, tubes and fittings for holes or cracks. Replace any of these that are damaged at all.

Just go to any auto parts store, take out the piece that needs replacing and tell them you need a new one.

Make sure the new piece fits snugly and is airtight. This should run you up about seven dollars, if it does turn out to be the problem.

Hi,

Thanks for using FixYa!

I understand that you are having transmission problems. Sadly there is only one solution with the problems that you have mentioned. You need to have your automatic transmission overhauled.

I hope you get this problem sorted out right away. Have a nice day.

What will make car whine when accelerating with a 2000 cavalier

If its in your engine it may be your belt tensioner and since you are not real specific if its coming from engine compartment thes cars were notorious for having bad wheel bearings which will whine louder the faster you go.

My 2003 Pontiac Grand Am whistles when I accelerate quickly and always when I am going 40 mph or more. It also recently started to shift differently, it feels like it is taking longer to shift.

The first thing is to make sure you are not low on transmission fluid. I would expect more a whining noise than a whistling. But the slower shifts may definitely indicate a low fluid level and/or fluid that is long overdue for a drain and refill.

My 2002 chevy cavalier smells like burning plastic inside of the car when I get in after warming it up on cold days. I also have a whining sound when I accelerate and is now a high pitched squeal. It...

My guess would be you either have an oil leak that is causing the smell and causing the serpentine belt to slip, or you have a pulley for the serpentine belt that is not spinning freely and causing the belt to slip. A slipping belt can also cause the burning smell that you describe. You might have a AC compressor clutch that is failing and not freewheeling correctly, you could have an alternator with a bad bearing, you could have an idler pulley or tensioner pulley with a bad bearing, etc. I'd certainly be checking for an oil leak as well though.

Engine making whining noise

There are a couple of things to check. If your power steering pump is low on fluid, or a bad bearing is in the Alternator, they will whine. The PCV valve or any hole in the Vacuum lines will whine as RPM is increased. Even having the Air filter box not fully seated will make a whining noise.

Now both automatic and manual transmissions can whine as RPM is increased. Check fluid for each.

Serpetine belt and pulleys-can make noise.

Sometimes you can shift into neutral at any speed and the engine rpm will drop almost instantly as the car rolls at speed. If the problem disappears as soon as the rpm drops, then an engine part probably is the reason.

Whining sound from under van only when i push the gas.

The serpentine belt is the most common cause for whining sound when accelerating, try to understand if noise is coming from serpentine belt.

Also check power steering belt under steering column, and also the rotor and chain, thei do not make whining noise , but can make noise when accelerating.

The belt is first suspect.

How do you know if your torque converter is bad on Jeep wrangler

First check fluid. Make sure it's full and clean and does not smell burned (compare to another good car)
Converter failure is usually most obvious when trans shifts to OD. if shift is late or makes bang noise going in, you likely have a problem. to check lockup, after od engages, lightly touch brake, trans should momentarily shift out of od. Whining is usually due to low fluid. Also check transfer case and both differentials for proper level and leaks.
