Please make sure fuel cap is tight, turn until it clicks a few times. If this is good you may have to replace the cap. Generaly if your gas cap is bad your check engine light will come on.

Yes. The evaporative emission system is comprised of a cannister to capture and store gas vapors, a purge valve solenoid that opens when certain engine conditions are met, and purges the vapors from the cannister to be burned in the combustion process rather than being released into the atmosphere, A key component of this system is the plain, old ordinary gas cap. If the cap was faulty it could cause problems in the evap system, which apparently caused you to fail the smog test. Hope this helped and best wishes.

I often find fuel in the fuel cap compartement although is tightly secured

sounds like the fuel is coming back up and hitting the fuel cap. this is due to the metal fuel cap that closs after you take out the gas pump. its probably from old age . if your talking about the fuel is going through the gas cap then replace the gas cap because its gasket could be worn out.

Failed smog test ; gross air leak at vapor recovery system. Replaced gas cap from parts house with a dealer supplied gas cap and the gross leak is gone but a minor air leak is...

If you just want to get through the smog test, they usually allow one monitor test to be incomplete and still pass.
If your area does, clear the codes and fill the fuel tank to the top.The other monitors should run and complete but the fuel tank monitor will not run with a full tank of gas so will not turn on the check engine light related to a tank vac leak.KEEP THE TANK FULL,and go get your smog test!

Engine swings but does not start

Your testing so far seems to exonerate components #1 to #5, and #13.
Since you've already replaced a number of parts to address the problem, I thought I should try to be comprehensive:

Priority Action Part Type Cause
1 Inspect Ignition Switch - Improperly Connected or Faulty Ignition Switch.
2 Inspect Battery - Battery Discharged or Faulty.
3 Inspect Battery Cable - Coroded, Broken, Shorted or Poorly Connected Battery Cable.
4 Inspect Starter Solenoid - Starter Solenoid Faulty.
5 Inspect Starter Motor - Starter Motor Faulty.
6 Inspect Wireset - Worn or Damaged Spark Plug Wires.
7 Inspect Ignition Coil - Faulty Ignition Coil.
8 Inspect Distributor Cap - Loose, Cracked or Worn Distributor Cap.
9 Inspect Spark Plug - Incorrectly Gapped or Fouled Spark Plug(s).
10 Inspect Distributor Cap and Rotor Kit - Loose, Cracked or Worn Distributor Cap, or burned rotor contacts.
11 Inspect Fuel Tank - Fuel Tank Empty.
12 Inspect Carburetor - Worn, Faulty or Damaged Carburetor.
13 Inspect Fuel Pump - Faulty Fuel Pump.
14 Inspect Fuel Pump Strainer - Fuel Pump Strainer Clogged.
15 Inspect Fuel Filter - Fuel Filter Clogged.
16 Inspect Air Filter - Air Filter Clogged.
17 Inspect Fuel Injectors - Fuel Injectors Clogged/Inoperative
18 Inspect/Test PCM - Powertrain Control Module (Computer) defective - sending incorrect ignition/timing signals to fuel injectors
19 Inspect Fuel Rail - Fuel Rail leaking/broken causing inadequate/low fuel pressure.

Use a HEI (High Energy Ignition) tester to see if you have spark to your sprak plugs - if not, suspect Ignition Coil, Distributor Cap, or Distributor Rotor.

My 2007 Chevy Avalanche failed the emission test with the code of P0455 what is the problem?

It is probably the evap vent valve. A new vent solenoid valve has been redesigned to correct the problem you are having. I would recommend purchasing the dealer component.
I hope this helps.

What is the code 456 in mitsubishi eclipse 2007 gs

P0456? very small evap leak, for a 2007 was there a fuel pump recently done? if not replace the gas cap, why would I say this , In smog test yes I am the ***** that keeps people from passing the smog test even if they get a three month notice and they bring it in to me on the due date. And it fails ,Replace the cap. reset the light with a scan tool or do this 40 good ignition start up, with no fault occuring. or 2 trip with no fault occurring. there the light will reset.

Failed smog test due the leak in evap system. They said it was a small leak somewhere between the gas tank and evap canister. How can i find the problem?

Inspect the gas cap or replace it,if you all ready replaced the gas cap, then youll need to search elsewhere, to find such a leak will take a smoke machine if you dont have one and want to find the problem yourself you ll need the car history, First has the fuel pump ever been replaced? if it has been or not been you ll need to tighten all clamps at the fuel tank refill hose,at the area and work your way to the canister.when you are done you need to run the car whether you cleared the CK ENG lit or not The ECM will need to see 40 ignition start or a 2 trip restart. and if your repair was sucessful it will pass the monitor and the light will go out.Small leak?your looking for a loose clamp.

I went for a smog test. everything passed but the fuel evap test.

Fortunately, this problem is limited in possible issues. Look at correct and functioning, and tight fuel cap, which is most common issue. There are vent tubes, vapor seperators, charcoal canisters, and purge systems, but they all are pretty rugged and rarely fail...Usually the test centers pressureize the cap and the fuel tank. You really need to know which one failed.

Some test centers only read the computer data, but that should have invoked the indication light, and then you would certainly fail...if you have a check engine light, pull the codes and fix that indication.

Failed smog because of leak in fuel line

I hazzard a guess but I would replace the gas filler cap. (the thing you take off when you put gas in the car)After all it is a pressure balanced situation.

My 1991 Chevy lumina 4 door sedan keeps failing smog cause of the fuel evap test how can i diagnose the problem my self without spending all kinds of money. also where can i find a diagram of the evap...

Did they explain the fuel evap test to you and what may have caused you to fail? Most smog tests that I've dealt with only test your gas cap and don't actually test your evap system itself. Gas cap is part of your evap system so when the cap fails, you automatically fail your evap system test even though they don't actually test it.

I recommend replacing your gas cap and giving it another shot as the cap will cost $10 to $20...
