Question about 1986 Ford Ranger 2WD

2 Answers

I have just replaced the starter motor on my 1996 chevrolet astro 4.6 V6 explorer. It still struggles to engage with the fly whell and emits a high pitch squeal (Just like the noise made when you turn the ignition when the engine is running) I had ti get under the van and move the crank slightly for the starter to engage. when i drove no problem however once i stopped it did the same. do i need to replace the flywheel?

I think you need to put some shims between the starter and the engine for clearance

    ok

you need a welding shop. i took mine to a welding shop and they welded up the teeth on my fly wheel with a good hard rod . and they used a die grinder to cut the teeth back in the flywheel. they did it while it was on the truck. hope this helps you. there will be about 4 or 5 teeth missing mine has been starting for 1 and a half years now

Did you put the starter on a explorer or an astro?if its on an astro the new starter may use shorter bolts than the one you tok off.try putting three washers on each bolt, should solve your problem.

1996 Chevy Astro V6 67K wont start when cold, needs engine starter fluid, ok when warmed up. Runs smooth. What is wrong?

I would say that the choke sensor (or whatever it is called) went bad & isn't telling the computer that it's cold & requires more fuel. Instead of starter fluid, did you try to push the foot feed 1 or 2 times?

Chrysler sebring 2.5L V6...sounds like starter is spinning but solenoid is not engaging...timing belt intact... this does not seem possible..am I crazy?

Well your not crazy but you are talking about 2 different things. The starter will spin but there is a thing called a ben-dex that is driven out of the starter motor by centrifugal force it then engages the starter ring on the flywheel, it is probably this that is stuck or seized up and not engaging the fly wheel. Answer is to remove the starter and see if this is the problem.

Have a 95 chev s10 with 2.2 and standard trans. intermiten won't start when it dosen't start I can hear the starter spining but it dosent engage with the motor, already replaced starter and selenoid and...

Was the starter shimmied to match up with the fly wheel properly so the starter gear fly wheel ring gear don't bind or out to far apart that they don't reach each other. The other problem is that if the starter gear was to far apart, it may have shaved the teeth on the starter gear causing your engine not to turn.

1996 ford explorer 4wheel drive will not engage into the hubs need to know how it works

make sure your 4WD switch is working.and fuse is okay.because your 4WD is control by 4 electric shift motors in which drive a rotary cam which moves the mode fork and range fork inside the transfer case to select between 2WD HIGH A4WD - 4WD HIGH AND 4WD LOW RANGE.a shift motor sensing plate on the shift motor monitors the range in which the transfer case is operating a transmission range sensor monitors the gear position of the transmission.which must be in neutral to shift into low.a pair of solenoids one for 2WD one for 4WD.mounted on the upper right firewall route vacuum to the vacuum motor which engages and disengages the center axle disconnect collar in the front axle assembly.a 4 x 4 shift motor relay module contains two GEM controlled relays which shift the transfer case shift motor between 2WD and 4WD modes.a solid state clutch relay activates the A4WDclutch inside the transfer case.

Highly possible problem is the starter solenoid. You may hae to replace starter. Remove and have it checked.

Won't start, starter will spin but will not engage fly wheel to crank up engine

Sounds like the starter drive is shot, best thing to do is replace starter with new or rebuild.
