Need more info. but did you check fuel pressure? key on engine off. to you hear the pump, it will come on for about 3 secounds then stop, thats normal. If you hold the pedal down very slight to open trottle will it stay runing? if so min. idle is off, may need to clean trottle bore. cHECK THIS EASY STUFF FIRST. DONT ALWAYS TRY TO FIND THE PROBLEM IN ONE SHOT. ITS BEST TO FIND OUT WHATS NOT WRONG THIS WAY YOU DONT HAVE 10 DIFFERANT PEOPLE TELLING YOU TO TROW PARTS AT IT. remember, your freind may have had a problem like your with his car but dont bet its always the same thing wrong with yours. i worked foe saturn 1992 2006

My 1999 silverado still has a problem. as you know i changed out the steering column and it wouldnt start so i reprogrammed the column to the truck. now it will start but immediately dies. How do i go...

This may not be helpful, but if I was troubleshooting this I would start off by not assuming it has to be related to the steering column work. At that point I would double check everything from fuel pressure to electronic sensors and perhaps even start by looking if any codes have logged. I would also check the condition of ground straps, etc unless you have a good reason to suspect the ignition switch and column?

97 marquis fires up but dies

Do you have power to the fuel pump once the key ios released? Try this, start the engine and carefully let the ignition switch back off until the starter is not engaged, does it stay running? If so you need a new ignition starter switch, the switch is located on the top bottom of the steering column under the dash.

1992 Buick LeSabre won't start when key is turned on-lights on dash light up, horn & lights work. Can cross starter and get it to start, then it dies right away. Were told it might be a bad key or bad...

It is not the key or lock cylinder - they do not affect the runability issues you are having. I suspect your mechanical ignition switch is bad and needs replacement. It is located on top of the steering column by your feet and you'll need to lower the steering column to get to it. Before replacing it check the wire harness for corrosion or dirt, clean all contacts, grease with dielectric grease and try again. If it still won't start then replace that switch, making sure you mark the exact location of the old switch before removing and the installing the new switch in the same location. It is also critical you have the metal rod in the correct place and that it moves freely.

If your Ford Focus is not starting, and you know the battery and alternator are good, the problem could lie in the ignition system. The ignition switch is a whole cylinder inserted into the steering column that connects to the starter motor. When you change an ignition switch, you are also replacing the key.

  1. Remove the dashboard panel below the steering column in your car; it should be screwed in place. Remove the steering column's upper cover by releasing its clips with a flat-head screwdriver.
  2. Look for the audio control switch---a small device sticking out of the steering column that acts like a remote control. If one exists, release the switch's plastic locking tang with the screwdriver, and unplug the electrical connector to remove the switch.
  3. Loosen the steering column by releasing the locking lever, and remove the steering column's lower cover by pulling out the screws with the screwdriver.
  4. Use your ignition key to turn the switch to the left---the position that would activate the accessories but not start the car. Insert the screwdriver into the hole in the top of the cylinder to depress the detent spring, and pull out the cylinder with the key inside.
  5. Insert the new key into the new ignition switch, and line up the switch inside the steering column so it's in the same place the old switch was in when you removed it. Make sure the detent locks into place; then turn the switch so it's in the "Off" position.
  6. Replace all the covers and panels you removed to access the cylinder, along with the audio control switch, if applicable, in reverse order of

Things You'll Need:
  • Small flat-head screwdriver
  • Ignition switch and key

Tips & Warnings
  • Older Ford Focus models may have a different method of removing and changing the ignition switch. Check an automotive guide for your particular year and model.
  • Always disconnect the negative (black) battery cable before working on the ignition or any other electrical component of your car.

I hope helped with this (remember rated this help) Good luck.

How do i change the ignition key switch in my 1988 gmc sierra

if your key won't work ,the steering wheel has to come off to replace key switch - special tools needed - if the problem is engine not starting or cranking over - the electric switch the key rod goes down to is on the bottom of the steering column above brake pedal

2005 ignition switch

Good day;
The following is the removal of the switch
1. remove the steering column trim covers.
2. disconnect the ignition switch harness connector.
3. turn the switch to the run position

IMPORTANT THE IGNITION SWITCH MUST BE IN THE RUN POSITION DURING REMOVAL IN ORDER TO AVOID DAMAGE TO THE IGNITION SWITCH.

4. remove the switch screws
5. remove the ignition switch from the steering column

if the ignition switch is replaced and a learn procedure is not performed the engine will crank but not start or will start and stall immediately.

30 minute learn procedure
1. turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF
2. attempt to start the engine then release the key to ON. the vehicle will not start
3. observe the SECURITY telltale. after approx 10 min the telltale will turn OFF
4. turn OFF the ignition and wait 5 seconds
5 repeat steps 1-4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles (30 min) the vehicle is now ready to relearn the PASSLOCK sensor data code and or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.

IMPORTANT: THE VEHICLE LEARNS THE PASSLOCK SENSOR DATA CODE AND OR PASSWORD ON THE NEXT IGNITION SWITCH TRANSITION FROM OFF TO CRANK YOU MUST TURN THE IGNITION OFF BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO START THE VEHICLE.

6.start the vehicle the vehicle has now learned the passlock and or password
7. if you have a scan tool clear any codes if needed or disconnect the battery for 30 sec. the history DTC will self clear after 100 ignition cycles.

hope this helps

Cheers
