Question about 1999 Ford Windstar

Can you reset a Rear Electronic Module on a 2003 Windstar?

I have diagnosed my 2003 Ford Windstar's bazaar behavior (dome lights, fuel gauge, door locks, break and turn signal lights all not working regularly - off and on behavior) to the REM. However before I spend a ton of money getting this replaced, can I reset the module to default and see if it fixes the issue?

Also, How do I find out what each module does, i.e. What does the Front Elec Module do vs. the Rear Elec Module?

If you have idea about electronics , all fault in ford product are not complex , the ford product was design for new generation technology , i have two answer for this question that may solve the problem , 1. you will need to check interior fuse box if there power relay switch active and trace burnt fuse , and use the manual to track each fuse that link to FEM and REM , there after if there is any burnt fuse or cable trace the cable to the supply device or instrument cluster to identify the cause of burning and then disconnect such device such as rear wiper ,and trace the REM to the panel , and check if there's any burning on the REM board , and unsolder the first relay and correct the burnt printed board line with cable not more than 1-5 kilo-ohms , then replace it make sure the car is disconnected from battery before any technical bench work . thanks
2. use VCM device to scan the system with software from ford .and the error will be detected ....... use my idea if you're technically oriented . thanks

There are 2 body control modules, a front [fem][under drivers side dash] and a rear [rem][right rear quarter trim behind jack tools] The rear is subject to water intrusion if the quarter trim windows are left open in the rain..It sounds like most of your problems are related to the rear unit. Let me know if you need more help, you can try drying out this module if its a water concern, if it smells burnt, it probably won't work and will need to be replaced.
It's really necessary to have a expensive computer scan tool to diagnose these problems, all the pinpoint tests are wrote that way. Here is a list of what each module controls.
    Principles of Operation
The Windstar's electronic functions are divided into zones. The front electronic module (FEM) controls the front portion of the vehicle and the rear electronic module (REM) controls the rear portion of the vehicle. These systems rely heavily on the standard corporate protocol (SCP) communication network in order to transmit and receive signals.
The FEM controls the following systems:

    • wiper, washer (front and rear)
    • warning chime
    • accessory delay
    • switched system power (relay 1 and 2 of 4 relays)
    • driver one-touch power window
    • front blower motor relay
    • front parking lamps
    • cornering lamps
    • front headlamps
    • front turn signal lamps
    • front door locks

    Inspection and Verification
    1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.
    1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical damage.

Visual Inspection Chart ElectricalBattery junction box (BJB) fuse 2 (10A)Central junction box (CJB) fuse 14 (10A)Wiring harnessConnector(s)Circuitry
    1. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • check that the program card is correctly installed.
    • check the connections to the vehicle.
    • check the ignition switch position.
    1. If diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool manual.
    1. Carry out the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
    • CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, refer to Section 418-00.
    • NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIP for FEM, go to pinpoint Test A.
    • SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out self-test diagnostics for the FEM.
    1. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics.
    1. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, refer to the appropriate section of the Workshop Manual to continue diagnostics.

    Principles of Operation
NOTE: Note: Upon installation of a new rear electronic module (REM), the module must be reconfigured. Refer to Section 418-01.
The REM controls the following systems:
    • switched system power (relay 3 and 4)
    • rear window defrost relay
    • auxiliary climate control
    • electronic day/night rear view mirror
    • overhead interior lighting
    • sliding door and liftgate power locks
    • fuel sender signal transmission
    • rear park lamps
    • brake lamps (including high-mount stoplamp)
    • backup lamps
    • rear turn signals

I Need wiring diagram for turn signal on a 1996 ford windstar

The turn signals on your Windstar are controlled by the front electronic module and the rear electronic module. If you are having problems with the turn signals, you should BEGIN diagnosis by scanning these modules for fault codes.

Wjth all that said, If you are having problems with the rear lights, failure of the rear electronic module is pretty common for Windstars.

Can you reset slidig doors 2000 windstar se electric doors quit working

Hi Ryan,

The power sliding doors on your Windstar are pretty complicated. There are many things that can cause them to stop working. The4 FIRST step in diagnosis is to access the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) data and retrieve any fault codes that may be present and diagnose accordingly. Please note that "generic" OBD code readers CANNOT access this information. You will either have to have access to a scanner that can retrieve this "vehicle specific" information or you will have to take the vehicle to someone who does. Please also note the information below.

What is the difference between an ECM and a BCM? Does a BCM have to be flashed?

The ECM (Electronic control module) runs the engine and the emission control system, the BCM (Body control module) operates most electrical body functions like wipers and interior lights and power windows and door locks plus the security system in may cases, the ECM (on this car now known as the PCM since 1996 by federal mandate) can be flashed, which just a reprogramming of the EPROM chip

Power door locks

This could be hard to diagnose for someone that doesn't know about electronically controlled automotive systems . There are two electronic control modules involved ! (FEM) front electronic control module and the (REM) rear electronic control module . The first step would be to hook up a scan tool to look at input data to the control modules. Corrupt signals to the module ! B+ power an ground circuits problems . The wiring inside the harness from the body to driver door , opening an closing of the door breaks the wires over time . Load testing the circuit will find the problem.
