About a 1000 lbs max. This is a uni-body car. The trailer setup is most likely aftermarket. These cars obviously weren't designed for hauling but light loads can be done, it just taxes the brakes and suspension more. I for sure wouldn't go more then 1500 lbs for any kind of serious distance. A very short trip maybe. Hope this helps. If you having any other questions let me know. Also make sure rust has not effected the strength of the trailer hitch or welds to the car.
Thank you,
Lee
If you already called and that is what they say the user manual states if his vehicle is the same then you may have already had your answer. I am going off of experience with small cars. I have a 85 toyota mr2 with 4 cylinder engine with same horsepower. I would not tow that much with these little cars even having a manual transmission. What they were made to do and what they can do 18 years later are two different things. Also if your going to be using a trailer its inevitable your causing extra wear out of the vehicle. You would be much more suited finding a cheap jeep on your local craigslist with a hitch already on it. Not saying you can't do it, but that is why I would keep the weight down.
owners manuals for as cheap as 5$ on ebay. Though with a runner like a toyota, it might be better to use all the gas mileage you can out of it without using it up on hauling.

Thank you for the reply.
First, please clarify whether your answer is part of the monthly plan of expert advice; i apologize for my confusion, since i also posted the question on the forum.
I was not able to find an owner's manual for this car on the web, but called a local dealer and was told that the specs for his car are 2000 lbs max trailer weight and 200 lbs tongue weight.
Where does your information come from?
I have not yet a hitch installed, but consider it for a small utility trailer which i would use mostly locally.
I want to be as accurate with the specs as possible to avoid damage to the car.
Regards,
Arie
