I have it routed over the the pwr steering pulley and the upper motor pulley...yet there is still slack. Is there any other may to tighten it other than pulling the pump over?

Does your vehicle have a V belt on the power steering pump or is it a flat serpentine belt with a belt tensioner?

  • Richard Scordino May 11, 2010

check how you have it routed. if you get it wrong you can run into that problem.

Apparently you've got the wrong size belt.... no other explanation.

Have a loud squealing around pulleys after changing water pump can't figure out were its coming from any suggestions

It may be the steering pump pulley or just a loose belt. Worst case would be the pump bearings. Is the steering pump the only thing the belt drives? You could try using Belt Ease, from a auto parts store or I have had luck just rubbing the belt with bar soap, but not while it's running of course. Make sure the belt is tight.

Kia sportage 2003 power steering belt

There should be two bolts to loosen; one at the top front of the pump, the other at the rear of the pump running through the bracket. Loosen them and pull the power steering pump to take out the slack. DO NOT pry on the pump or you will damage it. when you have the slack out of the belt tighten the front bolt and then the rear one.

How do I go about changing the small belt that goes to the power steering pump on 1998 Toyota Camry with the 2.2 engine

You need to remove the AC/Alternator belt first. There is a pivot bolt on the alternator that needs to be loosened. It faces toward the driver's side under the alternator. Then on top there is a long bolt that needs to be loosened. As it loosens push the alternator down and you will get enough slack to remove the belt.

For the power steering belt, remove the front passenger-side wheel. You will see a black cover(called a fender apron)- remove it. I believe the bolts are 10mm. You can now see the power steering pump- look at the side of the pump that faces the firewall. You will see another long bolt (similar to the AC/Alternator adjustment bolt), loosen it some and push the pump to get slack in the belt.

1986 S-10 stalls when making left turns only.

seems like you got the problem solved. could be a power steering problem. maybe the engine belt is too slack. tighten the belts. check all the belts. if power steering belt is slack and you turn the wheel should get hard and the vehicle shuts off.

Electric power steering quit is there a fuse on 2007 chevy equinox

The Chevy Equinox has an 80 Amp mega fuse that tends to fail and cause all sort of power steering and Stabilitrak issues. Before I messed with the belts or power steering pumps, I would check the fuse first.

Replacing the serpetine belt on a 2006 camry

Power steering pump--2001 hyundai elantra

If it's not a serpetine belt, max deflection of 3/4" on longest segment should be safe,  don't make alternator belt tight as a drum or you will burn out alternator bearings quickly.  If it has serpentine belt, the spring tensioner should keep the belt properly tensioned unless it's worn out.
It only needs to be tight enough to not slip, too loose will squeal and you will have to tighten,  to tight will kill alternator and you will spend $$.
