Either the gauge or the sending unit. Both can be checked with an ohm meter for accuracy. You will need a manual that tells you expected resistance.

SOURCE: fuel gauge problem

The nature of the gauge is that it should behave with a linear taper between full and empty. If it works when full but then malfunctions as the level drops, the variable resistor in the sending unit which is housed along with the fuel pump in the gas tank is almost certainly at fault. The sending unit will have to be replaced to fix the problem. Expect this to be an expensive endeavor.

SOURCE: 2002 Avalanche gas gauge problems

Gm has a real problem with fuel tank sending units. That is what is wrong. You need a fuel tank sending unit. You can only get them aftermarket with the whole fuel pump module, but you can buy them seperate if you buy it from the dealer.

I had the same problem. My battery was going bad. When I replaced it with a new one, the fuel gauge worked fine.

SOURCE: Full tank of gas and getting low fuel indicator on dash

Bad fuel level sensor. Unfortunately it is located inside the gas tank. Fairly common problem on GM's. Due to sulphur in fuel. Corrodes the sensor tabs. Expensive to have repalced and NOT a do-it-yourself project, unless you have dropped a tank before.

My polo 1.4 se's fuel gauge has sat on 3 quarters for 3 days now, not normal with the amount of driving I do daily, what could be causing the problem? It changes a bit when on a slope though

Hi Josh:
I'd start by completely filling the fuel tank.
Since you know how far you usually can go on a full tank, when you have gone about alf that distance, the gauge should show about half a tank, and when you've gone just over 3/4 of that distance, the gauge should be starting to show on the low side.
At least, if you know that the gauge is not reading correctly, you won't run out of gas if you keep track of the distance and always fill the tank completely.
Hope this helps.

My gas gauge will show 1/2 tank and computer will show 98 miles left. When I pull into my girlfriends driveway facing car down incline, feel gas moving in tank, when I pull out, tank show 3/4 full and 150...

OK I HAVE THE ANSWER. The fuel pump needs to have an adequate gas supply to start up. When low, or on a steep angle, and especially when BOTH conditions occur, the pump is no longer submerged. A check valve is intended to retain gas at the pump in that case, but over time it leaks. So actually, there are THREE things that must happen -- park on a hill, be low on gas, and leave it there for a long time. The fuel drains out, and no worky. The check valve cannot be easily replaced by itself - it comes wiht the pump as an assembly. Two fixes -- if the check valve is old enough to leak, the pump is old too. Replace them both. Or, just avoid the problem -- the pump could have years left. I had my pump checked, and it does appear to have years left, so now that I know the problem, it hasn't happened again. THIS IS THE CORRECT ANSWER.

My 05 Volvo XC 90 shuts down in mid drive or idle mode

So did they put more gas in the car and did it run fine. It's happened before. And just cause the gauge says whatever. It's not perfect and could be a hose leaking inside the fuel tank and may need to be taken apart to find out what's wrong. Has the fuel pump been worked on and maybe done something incorrectly. Can't tell you what's wrong cause we don't know. How long did the car run before it happened again. If you keep the gas above half does it run fine.

Gas gauge shows low fuel but there is plenty of fuel

Hi.
3 options.
1.The electrical coupler to the Fuel tank may have got corroded, creating a power "shunt".
2. The tank level foat, with has a rheostat on it has failed.
3. The tank Level Float has perforated, and the inducted fuel has made it "sink", giving a false reading in all cases.

THE FUEL GAGE PROBLEM IS MOST LIKELY THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR.
