Question about 1984 Ford Mustang

1 Answer

What additive can I put in my car that will clean my valves and stop it from valve tapping? I heard that sometimes people use ATF in the oil because it has a detergent that will clean it. Is this true?

Send the valve settings for a toyota 3L engine

Valve setting? Most engine valves have an automatic adjuster to self adjust the setting. You didn't say you had it apart. So, I'm thinking you have a dirty condition that would make the adjuster or valve tap. If so good additives just for both those conditions can restore the adjusting by cleaning and freeing the ailing parts. Try the link below for more info and needed product. 2008 dodge ram 4.7 ticks at start up. i heard if i put a half quart of ATF in it that i will clean it out and it will stop. true of false

false-- Remember that you require a certain viscosity oil in the sump and any oil that thins out the sump oil will cause damage to the bearings. Check that the oil filter in use has a non drain back valve in it to retain oil in the hydraulic tappets on shut down. The best oil to clean out an engine is diesel oil as used in diesels. The viscosity is right and the extra detergents in the oil will remove all sludge in the engine. The problem is because it is doing the job then the filter has to changed every 5000miles or sooner depending on the condition in the engine. As a point of interest diesel oil can be used in a petrol engine all the time.

Oil light comes on and then a light tapping is heard in engine

Try an oil change with the manufacturer recommended oil. Make sure it is the correct weight, type and grade. I never recommend synthetic for older cars with high miles. You can also buy oil additives at the parts store designed to increase oil pressure and quiet noisy lifters/valves. Oil light means low oil pressure, usually due to broken down old oil, dirty oil filter, or incorrect oil weight used.

What can i do to quiet a valve tap in 2001 ford crown victoria

easy way: oil additives found at auto stores will have something to reduce/stop valve tapping. change your oil and add the additive before filling the engine back up. that will fix it for a few thousand miles till you have to do it the hard way. the hard way: remove the rocker cover, use a feeler gauge and a ford service manual to get each cylinder to where it needs to be adjusted and feel the rocker gap and adjust to suit.

When car is on whether driving or idling, it makes tappping noise.

Could be lifter noise...valve cams, parts of the engine, are supposed to move the valves up and down to let in air and let out exhaust...there are lifters that good between the cams and the valves to make sure the valves are tight against the cams, they maintain the tightness even when things wear...when the lifter stops doing its job, it lets a gap form between the valve and the cam, and a tapping is heard, actually metal hitting against metal...this could be from the lifter being damaged, dirty, or starved for oil...make sure your oil level is right, make sure the oil is clean...sometimes a dirty lifter can benefit from a fresh oil change...if the tapping keeps up, damage can occur to the valve ends or cam probably wouldn't notice the engine not running as well, unless damage occurred that caused to valve to stop working...there are lots of other sounds from the engine that are bad, like persistent knocking, which is a piston in the act of breaking, and not so bad like ignition knocking from using too low an octane gas...depending on the engine type, tapping could be lived with for years, and sometimes lifter replacement, if needed, can be fairly inexpensive...good luck...

Valve tapping ccan I fix it myself before I take it to mechanic

Inspect/Test/Service/Replace Hydraulic lifters can fail for several reasons:
  • Dirt lodged in the check valve can allow the lifter to leak. Too much wear between the lifter and the body can cause excessive leak-down. This results in a noisy lifter.
  • A lifter might be noisy because of an oil pressure problem.
NOTE An oil pressure problem will be evident on hollow pushrod engines if no oil is reaching the rocker arms.
  • A lifter can become stuck because of varnish that accumulates between its plunger and body due to a lack of periodic oil changes.
  • A stuck lifter can sometimes be freed up by the addition of an additive to the oil, or by spraying fuel system spray cleaner down a hollow pushrod oil channel.
  • Lifters that stick because of varnish buildup can sometimes be loosened up by squirting carburetor spray cleaner down the hollow pushrod lubricating channel, where it contacts the rocker arm.
Hydraulic lifters are not rebuilt because they are relatively inexpensive. It is possible to disassemble and clean lifters but they must be reassembled with their mated parts. Because of the labor time involved, this procedure is usually impractical.
Sometimes a piece of foreign material becomes lodged in the lifter check valve. If the lifter is removed and disassembled before serious wear between the lifter and cam lobe results, it may be cleaned.
Worn mechanical (solid) lifters can be reground.
  • The base of the lifter is ground to a radius on a special lifter grinder.
  • Roller lifters have a longer service life than standard lifters.
  • Wear can occur on the roller pin. Some of these pins are serviceable.
It might occasionally be necessary to disassemble a hydraulic lifter to clean it or to inspect it.
  • If this is necessary, disassemble one lifter at a time and pay attention to the order of the check valve assembly.
  • Lifter disassembly is done by pressing down on the pushrod seat with your thumb and using a screwdriver to remove the snap ring.
  • Remove the plunger from the body; this may require tapping the body.
  • Next, remove the check valve assembly.
  • After thoroughly cleaning the lifter components in solvent, visually inspect them for signs of wear.
  • If the internal components pass inspection, the lifter can be reassembled.
  • During reassembly, cleanliness of the parts is of utmost importance.

Driving down road stopped at stop light and motor died. started it back up and put it back in gear (C6 auto transmission) would not go! absolutely no prior problems. no slipping hard shifting or...

There is a governor in the transmission, look on the side of trans, and there is a bubble shaped cup, this comes off, this is the governor pull it out and disasemble and clean real good.A peice of trash is stuck in there somewhere. Also, chang e the fluid and filter, and refill with dextron 3 atf alonf with libe gaurd additive,This additive is good for valve bodies and governors. If a valve in the valve boddy is stuck, this will unstick it.You can find this additive at napa auto parts.

what this sounds like is that your engine is starving for oil and the tapping noise is yuour rocker arms. this could be due to sludge build up on the intake screen of your oil pump or the pump itself is weak and no longer is providing the needed oil pressure. another place for sludge to build up is the valve covers and until the engine heats up very little oil is circulating to the push rod, rocker arms, and lifters. my suggestion is to clean the valve covers, drop the oil pan and remove the pump to look at the gears to see if there are missing teeth. also clean the screen of the pick up tube. replace the oil filter and put in new oil also use lucas additive this will do a good job of keeping the sludge build up to almost nill. if the problem persists then i would say that one or more of your hydraulic liftyers is weak and then they will need replacing.
