I have a Volvo 2001 S60 Auto my problem is when at idle and in drive the engine surges and being an auto it wants to keep driving I have my footbrake pressed and the engine stalls it is a nightmare to park in confined spaces as It happens in reverse I had a diagnostic check by volvo and it came up no faults they said keep driving until a light comes on any advice as I have been told that it could be the engine managemet cost of the part is £1000.00 + vat and fitting any suggestions apart from selling it as the car has only 70,000 miles and is mint I have had it for 3 years and has never given me any problems
I had similar problem with my earlier car, Opel Vectra. The reason was a damaged cam shaft rev. speed sensor.

I also have a s60 T5 2001. I had a simialr problems and they told me I needed a new part costng $1900 odd. I did some research and discovered the sensor is prone to getting dirty. I took it to volvo they tok the part of and said its no good. I told them to only replace the gasket and clean the unit. Problem solved and has been perfect ever since. $350 for labour as it takes a while to get to the unit.

Hi, I had a similar problem. It's caused by the throttle position sensor. Your car may also go into reduced performance a.k.a. 'limp mode' after a while. Disconnect the negative terminal (-) on your battery overnight and reconnect it. It sorted out my problem.
