2006 Pontiac g6 code p1258 . The temperature gauge was fluctuating while driving from overheating to normal operation temp but no actual sign of overheating . So I replaced the coolant temp sensor ran it for 20 minutes and it was fine but the check engine light is still on and displaying code p1258 . Should I just clear the code with scanner tool ?

  • Robert Ramirez Mar 02, 2018

I also ran a freeze frame while the car was running , and the coolant temp stayed around 165. I will go back out soon to check all connections coolant level hoses ect

I suggest changing the cooling thermostat to make sure it's not getting stuck causing temporary overheating and flush the system and put fresh coolant in.
The guage will go hotter then go back to normal every time the thermostat opens to let cooled water into the engine block which is normal. Time for concern is when the guage goes hot and stays there along with bubbling sounds and coolant overflow onto the ground. Which you probably already know.

I had that once and the shaft to the impellor was broken ....

  • Robert Ramirez Mar 02, 2018

Would that cause a noise from the pump or not necessarily?

  • Warwick Wright

No not in my case it broke just after the bearing and impellor just pay there and did not cerculate the water in the block ..which lead to fluctuating guage

Look for a loose connection to the temperature sender unit on the motor.
If all connections OK, you may need a new temp sender unit.

SOURCE: check engine light code on for engine coolant

Check continuity of the sensor wire. It should run between pin #4 (check manual (chilton better than haynes for electrical) for location as sometimes there are design changes) of the black harness plug on the computer to the sensor. The other sensor wire is shared with the cps and tps sensors, so if you don't see problem readings with those that wire is likely good.
Also, make sure that you have no air in the cooling system or as it passes the sensor it can mess with the readings. Run the engine with the system open and the heat on high....I like doing this with the front of the vehicle either jacked up slightly or pointing up-hill... run a complete "cycle" from cold to operating temp and add coolant as needed.
Hope this helps!

SOURCE: Replaced engine coolant temperature sensor

Make sure that your thermostat is working correctly. Let the engine warn up, not long enough for the vehicle to get into close loop, but to where the hose is warm. At this point the hose should be hard. If it isn't hard you will also hear the water flowing as you squeeze it. Often the thermostat goes into a fail safe mode which is all the way open and with the engine having run hot, this could have caused failure here. If it does't pass this test, it should be taken out and looked at. If it is bad you will see it all the way open...you can always compare it with the new one.

Possible bad sending unit or shorted sending unit wiring.

Testimonial: "replaced the sensor, need a wiring diagram to verify DMM readings of the wiring are accurate."

Engine coolant Temperature gauge fluctuates

Watch the temp gauge when the electric radiator fans come on. The temp sensor that controls when the fan comes on may be faulty.

Temp gauge sits normal and after a while shoots to max with warning light visible..fans working no coolant loss..earlier today light came on at 70mph..drove 14miles tonight at average 50..and light did not...

Most obvious question is when that happens, is the engine actually overheating or just reading that it is?
If there are no signs of overheating, I'd check that the temp sender is working correctly and that the wiring to it is not grounding somewhere. Though not "high tech" you can tape a small dial type thermometer that has readings past 240 to the upper hose and check temp when light is on compared to "normal".If readings are similar, then I'd change sender.
Also check the a/c condenser for obstructions. (leaves, bugs, plastic bags etc). That alone can cause strange temp fluctuations.

Where is the temperature guage located under the hood in my pontiac g6. I can not find it to replace.

The temperature gauge is actually a needle that read a range of Hot/Cold on the dash instrument cluster. If you are referring to the coolant temperature sensor, the location depends on the engine size. Post the engine size and we'll answer it better.

they are designed not to fluctuate with engine temp and are kept stable once operating temp is reached. only if the temp exceeds a set mark will the needle rise to indicate overheating,
