Check wiring and have the voltage regulator checked as that is what controls the voltage

SOURCE: alternator not charging

Check for voltage with a multi meter or volt guage most of the GM trigger wires come from the computer and are only 5 volts. 5 volts is not enough to light some test lights. If still nothing the problem is probably the computer. But it can be manually excited. The two terminals in the alternator on the left of the pigtail (when looking from the front of the van) need + power. the far left is the trigger wire the one next to it is ignition power.

SOURCE: no power to starter 2004 chevy tahoe

Hi
It could be your neutral safety switch. It could be the starter relay which is located in the fuse panel box. It could be the smaller wire going to the starter could be loose or corroded.

SOURCE: 2000 ford zx2, battery light keeps coming on/off,

There seems to be a no charge state in this case. i recommend checking the charging system. use the procedure below to isolate this issue.

Wear protective eye wear and clothing and remove all jewelry when checking your battery and charging system. Jewelry is a good conductor of electricity and is not recommended. Most batteries wear out every 3 to 5 years and need to be replaced. Always replace your battery with an equal replacement battery to assure proper operation. Automotive batteries have a +positive terminal (red), - negative terminal (black). Electricity is stored in the battery and then supplied to the vehicle when the engine is not running. While the engine is running the vehicles alternator charges the battery for future use. (Note: never disconnect the battery while the engine is running. If the battery cable is disconnected from the battery a spark can be generated which can cause the battery to explode or a major electrical malfunction to occur.)

To check a battery surface voltage, remove the positive terminal protective cover. Connect the +positive side meter lead (red) to the positive side battery terminal. Connect the - negative (black) side meter lead to the negative battery terminal. With the vehicle not running and the car sitting over night the battery voltage should be between 12.5 and 12.8 volts.(You will need to use a voltmeter for this testing procedure)

The alternator is rotated by a drive belt driven by the vehicles engine while it is running. Electrical voltage and amperage are generated to recharge the battery and supply voltage to the electrical system of the car. The alternator is held in place with mounting bolts. There is a main electrical wire on the rear of the alternator that supplies voltage to a main voltage junction box. If your alternator is not charging properly, your battery will slowly drain down from operating all the electrical systems in your car and stop the car from running.(most non charge states will be the cause of a loose belt or a low tension rate, due to a mis-adjusted alternator. make sure you have enough tension in the belt for full rotation of the alt pulley)

Next, you will need to check the alternators output with the Amp meter.

Testing the amperage output of the alternator is good for measuring the amount (not the level) of voltage the alternator can produce. This test can be tricky because if the alternator is weak it can still show it as producing amperage. Which is good, but if the voltage is low, it will still allow the battery to go dead. To check the amperage output of an alternator an amp meter is needed. Once the meter is connected start the engine. Next turn on all electrical accessories and raise the engine idle to about 1200 RPM. The alternator should output the max amperage it was designed to produce. Example: a 90 amp alternator should output about 88 amps. Note: An alternator cannot sustain maximum output for long periods of time. If the alternator is forced to operate at maximum output it will overheat and fail. An alternator is designed to operate at max amperage output only for a reasonable amount of time.

((Connect the voltage meter lead the same way you would in a battery static voltage check, Start engine (do not drive) at engine idle the voltage should be between 13.6 to 14.3 volts. If not the alternator may need replacing.)))

When was the alternator replaced? was it a remanufactured alternator? This is common on GM trucks, fluctuating voltage is caused by a faulty alternator voltage regulator. Have the alternator tested, strong possiblityits defective!!Hopefully this helps!!

If possible try tapping on the starter with a hammer while someone is cranking it over. The electrical system test only tests for amperage draw and not dead spots. Do this after checking battery connections if connections do not correct the issue. If it cranks while tapping the starter then starter is having a issue.

Why does my 03 Chevy Tahoe show the battery light and then my airbag lights starts flashing which causes my ac to surge off and on

forget all that side show stuff
battery light (this means battery bad or Alternator dead. load test the battery fully. no way is it 19 years old and good.
charge it+ load test it(a tool) or get the battery tested in any shop or auto store, (most stores this is a free service) USA is.
then if Lamp glows again the alternator is dead.(battery good now)
caused by
  • ALT is bad
  • up to 3 fuses blown, for ALT.
  • alt belt loose or missing?
  • engine runs way way below 800 RPM, causing ALT to go off line.
last one is super rear and was EGR stuck open. super low RPM.

keep in mind, Alternators go off line on purpose if battery shorts a cell,
or has discovered an open CELL (10v battery not 12v)
this is to prevent 2 bad things, battery does not explode(acid bath)
and does not go over-voltage and blow up $3000 in electronics in the car. (never fun that and ALT's are much smarter now)

AC turns off on all modern cars for many reasons
battery lamp on,so the engine can get you home safely not wasting huge power from AC, as the ALT fails and the battery goes dead in 15 to 30 minutes, now does 30 min for sure in day light.
even DRL lamps go dead if ALT fails.LAMP battery glows.
and
to prevent evap core freeze up or compressor damage
or if engine overheats or PCM puts engine in limphome mode
to gain bad lost engine power, so you can drive safely.
The AC brain want to protect the engine and driver both.
in your mind wonder how low engine power happens passing a logging truck at 75mph.
bingo AC off line saves the day.
and at WOT too wide open throttle, drive may be in danger this.
also transmission too hot or in limphome it.
and more,

air bags brain does not like 10vdc, for DC power so , goes NUTS.
it will self cure later , new battery and or ALT

2000 Tahoe. Battery light

that lamp is ALTERNATOR (GEN?BAT) lamp
the alternator is dead or the fan belt that DRIVES it is slipping or bad or gone.
the car needs service in a REAL SHOP, WHY not get it serviced
as 99,9% today,. ????
fire your shop they FAILED you,. the lamp tells you this is a huge and serious problem , means car will soon stall driving for 1/2 to 1 hour
less at night, that is what this means
your shop tech is NO GOOD. find a real shop to fix your car
in USA we USE ASE shops. are you in USA? not told. you. 2wd car????
cars are not the same world wide. so country maters and engine size not told or tell the VIN and I tell you what you own.
2000 chevy Tahoe.
In the USA or OBD2 scan tools , connect it may say 2 things
battery is bad or alternator or even both
BATTERY CAN EVEN BE INTERMITTANT, A PAIN THIS, works correct then not the works, repeats. we load tests batteries fully.
1: check all fuses.FIRST.
2: load test the battery.
3: scan the PCM for DTC errors, tell them now.
4: engine at idle battery voltage is 13 to 15vdc, if lower ALT IS DEAD.(belts etc) or wires to it damaged.

(4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L) ' (4.3L). 4 engines is the USA, You have which
the PCM runs the ALT, fully and regulates it.
Yes a bad battery can knock he ALT off line, but we load test the b battery first 100amp load or more. all auto stores will test the battery for you, even for free,(USA) I only cover USA< cars, (spec) OKay?

99 chevy tahoe What can u do to test alternator, and how can u tell if its the problem

First make sure your batt connections are good then check the power wire onthe back of the alt make sure you have power then use multi meter start vehicle and measure the voltage across the batt. Then rev the eng 2000 rpm and it should be around 14 to 14.5 volts

2000 chevy silverado. alternator problems. start truck and meter shows about 11 to 12 amps for a few minutes then goes up over 14. Did this for several days. today started and went right to 14 amps then...

amps or volts
11 to 12 amps indicates nothing but if it is volts then it indicates that the alternator is not charging the battery
Battery voltage is 12 -13.5 volts and when charging is 14.5-14.8 volts dc
the rest of your statement indicates that the alternator or voltage regulator is faulty and you should have the charging system checked by an accredited auto electrician

ELECTRICAL PROBLEM

May I can put a nail in this one for you.The problem is your alternator. The proper charge rate is 13.6 to 14.2v Now get this. The higher the voltage, the lower the amps.Voltage @ the 14.2 end is moving the minimum amps. @ 15 v there os no charging happenning. Go to the other end and you'll find at 12v the alternator is puring the coals to the battery Alt @ max output. The difference between 12 and 13 / 14 and 15 is the is like a buffer. If the alt charges @ less than 13v for any length of time, It goes poof because of excessive heat.which is an indicator the battery is possibly ready to go poof also. Alt. function as a source of maintenance charging when deman is low and a compensator when demand goes up. That is why a low cranking amp battery is for lawnmowers and people that like buying batts and alts. Now, solution! Have your battery load tested. Chances are real good that it is not up to par. Hence, overworked alternator. If so, replace it. 650 to 850 cold crank amps rating . (cca ) Then have your alt tested output checked if you you end up with a new batt. If your alt puts oout in the given range, which should be around but not below 13v) After starting, it will charge heavy to make up for the cracking, but should get up around 13.6v within 15 seconds. Alts charge at all speeds, unlike generators of old which needed speed (rpms) to put out power. Alts do all the thinking and have internal regulators. Well anyway, You didn't ask for a course in Automotive electrical just a course of action. Remember, Battery first ten alt. Good luck. Any autozone or checker parts store can do all that checking for you. -Ned-

Battery indicator light on.

Check the alternator at the battery terminal with a voltage guage and engine running. At the battery terminal with engine OFF voltage should be at least 12volts with engine running it should be at least 14volts. If it Not 14 volts with engine running then the alternator is UNDER charging and will trigger the light on the dash. Good luck and thanks for using FIX YA.

Elec problem between alternator and battery

Rest at ease the 14 volts will not hurt your system idealy your alt will charge at around 14 to 14,5 volts at the alternator and probably have a slightly lower charge rate at your battery at around 14 to 13.5 at the battery this is completely normal
