Question about 1999 Ford Expedition

1 Answer

I have a 1999 Expedition XLT 4x4 and sometimes when i drive there is a loud clunk noise almost like the wheel is going to come off? Wheel bearings and u joints are good so what can it be? When i hit about 50km per hour and let off the gas it goes away. Its not always there either. Some days i can drive 1-2 hours before even hearing it and some not even 5 minutes.... please someone give me an idea? thanks.

Could be in the rear axle like gear slop. And you are sure it is coming from the rear right?

Hmmm Your 4 wheel drive is working right? There is a ton of stuff in the front that can be wrong on the 4x4 so I am not sure I can help you much on here. The best thing would be for a shop to put it on their hoist and run it. It is tough to diagnose the problem without hearing it for my self. Sorry.

My truck is stuck in four wheel drive

At the risk of going to the offensive, sometimes it's the simplest thing - you ARE putting it in neutral, at a stop, engine running, with the brake pedal pressed, when trying to shift out of 4wd, yes?

2) Check for blown fuse for 4x4 shift module

3)This sounds dumm, but worked on my wife 99. I took it to a school parking lot, put it in reverse, floored it and pulled on the lever and it popped out of 4x4

4) The shift motor is bad. Replace it.

Hope this helps.

There is a roar at the front driver side wheel we have had tires checked and that was not the problem . when you turn wheel to right the noise stops , if you go stright or turn left the noise remains.it...

You need to replace the wheel bearing. I would bet it is the right side. When you turn to the right the load of the vehicle is transferred to the left. Less load on the right side and the noise goes away. It is a classic sign of a bad wheel bearing.

I can give you further instructions on how to make the repair. Just need to no if its 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive.

My 1999 expedition has a grinding noise when I excelerate

it may be the drive shaft or the rear axle or a wheel bearing

FRONT WHEEL BEARING NOISY

Most likely it is a Hub bearing worn out. If you have access to a highway with a sweeping curve the outside tire turns faster than the inside tire following the curve. So if the noise increases on a left curve, the right side is bad. If the noise increases on a right curve, the left bearing is bad.

You did not state whether you have 4 wheel drive or 2 wheel drive.
The 4 wheel drives have the Hub bearing. Check around for parts prices. The price can vary by $100 from store to store. If you have the 2 Wheel version it is much cheaper to replace and you will need a wheel bearing seal.

Do spend a little time checking the other components in a 4x4 as the additional components can also make noise.
