Rub your hand over the tread and try and feel for cupping or uneven tread patterns. This will create alot of road noise. If not, have your wheel bearings checked.

This rear end needs to be replace or re-built

This rear end needs to be replaced or re-built. The gears and or bearings are worn/shot. May be able to get a complete rear end from a Junk yard for much less, one in good condition. Good Luck

SOURCE: 1996 Audi A4 Quattro has a noisy rear differential

It's the wheel bearing. Guaranteed. Just replaced mine. Go to Audiworld tech articles for step by step instructions on how to test the wheel bearings. They must have been put in wrong last time or they just went out again.

SOURCE: Weird noise from my '01 PT cruiser.

It's possible that the you have "cupped" tread on a tire or two. After rotation you may hear it. Look at the outer edges of all of the tires for an uneven tread wear. Sometimes it takes a little driving to **** this down. If no luck here, I would stop back at the garage to have them verify there isn't a safety issue.

SOURCE: rear tires are making very loud noise, humming,

you either have a pulled belt in the tire or theres a separation in the tread belt and you need to have this checked soon as this tire could blow out at highway speed,if the noise is as bad as you say it is,jack up the van block the wheels and hand spin the tire and check and watch if it wobbles, has any flat spots, bulges wiggly tread in the tread face, just anything out of the ordinary

I have a saturn Vue 2003 with 150,000 miles. there is a loud humming noise when driving coming from the rear of the vehicle. I have rotated tires and balanced. Tires have 65% more wear to go. Muffler...

Based on your description: 150K+left rear slowed down much quicker than the right +/ and the humming noise, there is a great possibility that the Wheel Bearings will have to be replaced.

Loud Noise & Vibration

Who knows without inspecting it, but check the tires. Tires can cause serious problems even if they look ok. Though tires look fine, they can have an almost invisible way of vibrating a vehicle also un balanced tires can cause vibrations

Transmission hums. faster the speed higher and louder the hum. Almost sounds like super swampers. Wheel bearings for sure not the issue.

If the trans hums, the problem is in the trans and will have to come out for repairs. You say its not the wheel bearings, but thats a real common problem, and also the tires can make noises like a wheel bearing. Have a Professional check it out.

Humming

Chances are it's the tires rather than the engine.
Does the hum diminish if you back off the accelerator? If yes, then look at rear axle pinion bearing. If no, then feel across the tires. They should be smooth across. If they're rough, they will make a loud howling noise.

Whirring noise from the front of car as you drive.

I would first rule out the possibility of a "rough" tire making the noise. You can move the two front tires to the rear of the vehicle and see if that changes the noise any. If it does, you might have a worn tire that needs replacing or a tire that has worn unevenly and should be rotated and balanced more often....

Good luck..
