Question about 1998 Saturn SW

My 98 sw1 is running rough.it started last nite.no power/almost stalling but no code set.it set a po171 code on the way home.any ideas(i just have a code reader.)

P0171 (fault Location) System to lean, bank 1 (probable Cause) Intake/exhaust leak, AIR system, MAF/VAF sensor, fuel pressure/pump, injector(s), HO2S

HO2S is Oxygen sensor. MAF is Mass air flow sensor. Any one of these could cause a problem. Is this what your code reader said or does your code reader only read the codes and tells you nothing else?

98 dodge ram 1500 5.9L 2wd. Truck runs really rough, stalls, then won't start. No check engine light now. Had misfire codes, did tune up, now it still stalls and no check engine light.


What is the O2 sensor reading? If it runs rough check the engine compression, run an injector flow test and clean and replace as necessary. Check the EGR for leakage. Drive it and see if the misfire codes return, I think they will.

All of the codes you are getting except for one are indicating a running lean condition. This is most likely due to a vacuum leak or the pintle on the egr valve is worn out allowing exhaust gases to pass through all the time. If you have access to a monitor check the iac duty cycle as well as the dpfe sensor. If the iac is reading less than forty percent you have a vacuum leak. As well if the dpfe is reading above 1.13 volts the egr valve is bypassing. The last code you have is being caused by a faulty thermostat.

Well, code 336 is for a problem with the crank sensor, and code 171 is for fuel system too lean bank one which is the side with cylinder one. Since you have checked fuel pressure and I will assume fuel volume is good, the crank sensor or circuit could be at fault.

why was the sub frame replaced was the car in a wreck? i would check and see if any grounds were left off or broken.next test for a vacuum leak at intake. and or vac. hoses installed incorrectly.if you have a large library in your town you can look up repair manuals and look for a vac. hose routing. you should also perform a fuel pressure test.and yes you could have a bad crank sensor,which would cause your symptoms.i hope this will help you.

change fuel filter. you have a lean conditions and vacuum leak in intake check all vacuum hoses and pvc valve.replace plugs and wires if they have not been change.if all is good get it scan egr valve cause rough idling and stalling.

Symptoms of a faulty Camshaft Position Sensor can include hard starting (or no starting), rough running/misfiring and/or loss of power.

Code 340 COULD be caused solely by a faulty Camshaft Position Sensor. However, this code refers to the entire circuit. So, replacing the sensor may not fix the issue. The problem could lie in any part of the circuit - the sensor itself, the wiring, or the PCM.

Codes 171 and 174 typically appear together. They are caused by the 02 sensors reading too much air (lean) in the exhaust. In most cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. I typically take it off and spray it with electronics or brake cleaner. Just make sure it dries before reinstalling. If this doesn't eliminate the codes, inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, check for a dirty fuel filter and ensure the furl pressure is within limits.

For clarification, the first trip to the shop your car showed codes 402, 732, 733, 171 and 174. After changing the DPFE/EGR, did ALL those codes go away and now only codes 340, 171 and 174 exist? Or do you have the second set of codes in addition to the first codes?
