Question about 1998 Buick Century

My timing belt came off. I put it back on and realized that the very bottom pully thingy/sprocket? is not in line with the rest(like its coming off?!?!) causing the belt to pull away and come off. I tried tightening that botton pully but the pully moves with the bolt as i turn it. What do I do?

    When I try to loosen the bolt holding the damper on that damper just turns with it. How do I get it to stop to allow me to loosen the bolt? thanks for the help!!!!

    your right its the accessory belt, its the crank damper that is coming off.

    I don't this this is a timing belt. Timing belt is internal, you are talking about a serpetine belt. That said, not sure I can solve the rest of your problem with out seeing it.

Hi I'm litoshop the bottom pulley is the damper that damper could be broken if you tighten the crankshaft bolt and the pulley is not aligned then you may need to replace the damper and when you replace the damper before you put the bolt on use a little lock tite it's a liquid us mechanics use when we don't want a bolt to loosen so easy. if this information has been helpful please let us know thank you and good luck

Gently tap the pulley back onto the crank shaft. Retighten the bolt to proper torque spec.

    To remove the bolt use a socket and a braker bar. Put the socket on the bolt insert the braker into the socket. Use a 2'x4' piece of wood set in the frame or stand it on end to suport the braker bar handle. Then use the starter to turn the engine over, This will loosen the bolt. Be sure not to let the engine start. Just crank the engine for a couple of seconds.

How do I put timing back after I changer the timing belt


Hi there, Yeah this is a bit tricky. First things first. what engine do you have in ? Double cams have unique marks. You will see the left cam sprocket should be aligned with "IN" on the intake side and "Exhaust" on the exhaust side. On the same sprocket is a indent line on the edge of the sprocket on the exhaust side. The sprocket on the right side "Exhaust side", should be aligned exactly as the left one. So you have both sprockets aligned with the "intake" facing the intake side and the exhaust facing the exhaust side. You will now notice that there is a line up indent on the outer ring of both sprockets. These should be exactly facing towards each other. Now caution is advised here, even before you start with this, you must move your crankshaft sprocket to the left just so that all pistons are half way up. This will make sure when you do turn the cam shafts that the valves don't interfere with any piston. Now adjust the cam shafts as described above and use inventful mind to lock both cam sprockets in line together. Make dead sure with use of a ruler, that the lines on both sprockets are definitely lined up. Now move your crankshaft sprocket to the right and line up the two markers on the outer side with the line directly above further away from the TDC marks, "Located to the left". So to the right of those TDC marks is a Forged out line. Line the two dots on the c-shaft up with this line. When done with this you may fit on the belt and make sure that the belt is fitted tightly on the exhaust side meaning pulled to near tension, then follow through to the left cam and then over the water pump. Fit on the tension-er. Here you get two different types of tension-ers. Automatic one is fitted under the intake side cam sprocket, it gets hold down with a bolt. the wire fitted with the tension-er loops over a bolt already fitted on the motor. Using a allen key turn the tension er so that the align plate with v-shaped indent is facing directly to the bottom loop of the wire. Then tighten the bolt hold down to lock the tension er in place. Lastly the ideal method before you fire up the engine is to remove the negative battery terminal and after you have fitted the external belt sprockets, on the crankshaft is to turn the engine clock wise and make sure that no valve is interfering with a piston. Turn until you can see the timing marks you just setup aligns back to normal. On the outer belt sprocket fitted on the c-shaft, there is a mark as well, this should also line up with the line further away to the right from the other marks to the left located on the belt cover. When you have spun the c-shaft clockwise, about eight times and all the marks align back to normal without any valve interfering with any piston, you may finish of the rest and fire up. Here your good to go. Good luck

  1. Remove the Timing Belt 3.0 V6
    • Place the Voyager's engine in the TDC no. 1 position for cylinder firing in order to get proper alignment. Disconnect the negative cable on the battery.
    • 2Take off the accessory drive belts, and take out engine mount insulator, located in the engine support bracket. Detach the engine support bracket and take off the torsional damper and crankshaft pulleys. This ensures easier access to the timing belt.

    • 3. Locate the 2- to 3-inch wide timing belt in the front of the engine. Remove the cover of the timing belt.
    • 4Mark the course of rotation on the belt as a reference if you plan to reinstall it. Slacken the timing belt torsioner bolt and take off the timing belt. Detach the timing belt torsioner if needed.
    • 5Remove the crankshaft sprocket and the flange shield of the crankshaft sprocket. Secure the camshaft sprocket using a spanner tool MB990775, or something similar, and take off the bolt and washer to the camshaft sprocket.
    Install the Timing Belt
    • 6Use the retaining washer and bolt to fit the camshaft sprocket onto the camshaft. Utilize the spanner tool MB990775 and tighten the bolt. Mount the crankshaft sprocket and put on the timing belt torsioner and tensioner spring if it was removed. Hook the higher end of the spring to the water pump pin and bottom end to the tensioner bracket with the hook facing out.
    • 7Rotate the timing belt tensioner in a counterclockwise turn and tighten the bolt to momentarily hold it in place. Turn the crankshaft sprocket until the timing mark lines up with the timing mark on the oil pump timing mark. Revolve the back camshaft sprocket so that its timing mark lines up with the generator bracket timing mark. Turn the radiator side camshaft sprocket so that the mark aligns with the inner timing belt cover mark.
    • 8Connect the timing belt onto the Voyager's crankshaft sprocket, keeping the belt tight on the side of tension. Install the belt in the same rotational direction if using the original timing belt. Put the timing belt on the radiator side of the camshaft sprocket, and place the belt underneath the water pump pulley first, and follow that by putting it over the back camshaft sprocket and the tensioner.
    • 9Create tension on the side of the timing belt and correctly line up all timing marks. Put the crankshaft sprocket flange into place and loosen the tensioner bolt to allow the tensioner spring to put tension on the belt. Turn the crankshaft two clockwise turns. Line up the timing marks and tighten the tensioner bolt. Put on the timing belt cover and engine support bracket.
    • 10Put the engine mount insulator, crankshaft pulleys and torsional damper into place. Mount the accessory drive belts, connect the negative battery cable and check that the engine runs properly.

The timing belt broke and went to put a new one one and time the car but the crankshaft pully does not have an alignment mark on it to set the timing


The sprocket that is behind the pulley will have an indentation that will line up to a notch or a indent on the engine block.Ahter that is lined up ,see that all your cam timing marks are in line and not 180 degrees apart.Rotate till everything is lined than put pulley on and put a mark on it.

Hi,
I just did the timing belts on my 04' kia optima back in late november. I'm including a link that shows the timing diagram. First things first, to make it easiest, get all the timing marks lined up BEFORE you take off the belt. This is very important. You'll have to use a large socket wrench on the crankshaft to turn it manually until the marks line up (helps to have a second set of eyes for this).
As far as how to find the marks, for the camshafts up top, you're looking for a little V shaped nub on the casing. Should be directly above each camshaft sprocket. Then look for a notch in the camshaft sprocket. Line those up, and most of the rest should fall into place.
You will still need to check other marks. On the oil pump sprocket (just to the right of the crackshaft), there will be a V shaped notch on the sprocket and a V shaped mark on the engine housing. Verify they line up. Look for the same kind of marks on the crankshaft (which should be lined up anyway if the cams are lined up properly) and don't forget the balance shaft belt (seperate belt behind the crank sprocket that goes up to the left) which will also have similar marks. As a side note, my balance shaft belt was completely stripped, so I had to manually turn it until it lined up.
Once everything is lined up, you can remove the belt by removing the belt tensioner.
SAVE THE OLD BELT!!!
When you proceed to put the new belt on, you will notice that the two cam shafts have both lost their alignment slightly. They will have both turned in by one or two sprocket teeth. Unless you have a special tool, this is where the old belt comes in handy (as was my case). You will also need a second person.
Cut the old belt so it is one long strip. Your friend needs to have two large screw drivers ready (take this next advice with a grain of salt, much consideration and good judgement on your part). Start by having the new belt ready to be put on the the sprockets (your balance shaft belt should already be on as well). You should have a cotter pin or something holding the tensioner open so that when you're ready, you can pull the pin out and be ready. Using the old belt to pull the camshaft sprockets into proper position, have your friend use a screwdriver to hold them each in place (this is somewhat difficult, so like I said, have the new belt in a ready position to be quickly put on). Once your friend is holding them, start putting the belt on. Once the belt is in position release the tensioner.
Next, CHECK all of the timing marks to ensure that they're all still lined up. I say this, because my friend and I had to do this step twice to correct for an alignment issue we had with the oil pump.
If everything lines up, then you are ready to start putting it all back together. Good luck to you, and like I said, take the screwdriver and camshaft part with a grain of salt. It's what we did and it worked, but it's definitely not the recommended way to go about it.

TIMING BELT CHANGE You should have some mechanical skills before attempting any engine maintenance! These are basic instructions, and you must knoe what you removed, when, and what order so you can reinstall them in order. First, you have to remove everything in the way! You need to remove the Fan, clutch, and shroud, pump pully & drive belts. Next, you need to remove the Crank Pully:

1. Crank Pully Bolt 2. Crank Pully 3. Center Bolt 4. 5mm Hex drive (used to remove pully bolts) Once the fan stuff, and pully(s) are removed, then you need to remove the Timing Belt cover:

Once the cover is removed, you will need to loosen the adjusting nut and pully bolt on the Belt Tensioner:
A. Adjust Nut B. Pully Bolt C. TENSIONER PULLY Once the the Adjust Nut, and Pully bolt are loose, move the pully as far towards the water pump as possible.
Then, you can slip the timing belt from the sprockets. Check the tensioner for roughness and excess play! DO NOT MOVE THE CAM OR CRANK SPROCKETS! IF you do, then you will have to line up the Crank and Cam for piston number one at Top Dead Center before placing the new timing belt on! Note the timing marks on the crank and camshaft sprockets. IF YOU MUST! Allign the Cam and Crank at piston#1, Top Dead Center before removing the belt. Each sprocket has a small hole, with a line through it, and there is a small groove or "V" it alligns with on the engine. Now, once the timing belt is off, look at your new timing belt. Older belts use the Squared off teeth, while new ones have the rounded teeth. Make sure you have the correct belt for your sprockets! Never reinstall a belt that is in questionable condition. BELT WEAR CONDITIONS
If there are Arrows on the belt, they must be pointing to the RIGHT when you put the new belt on the sprockets. If there isn't one, then paint one on, and place the belt back on the sprockets. The arrow will indicate to a mechanic, this is the way the belt must be put back on (if they replace any cam or crank oil seals). Slip the new belt onto the Crank sprocket. While maintaining tension on the side of the belt opposite the tensioner, slip the belt onto the Camshaft sprocket. Releace the Tensioner adjusting nut to allow spring tension against the belt. Temporarily reinstall the crank pully, taking care to align the notch in the pully with the raised area on the sprocket. Rotate the crank clockwise two complete revolutions. Recheck the alignment of the of the valve timing marks. If they do not align properly, loosen the tensioner, slip the belt off the crank pully, align the timing marks, reinstall the belt, and check alignment again. Tighten the tensioner nut, then the bolt. Reinstall all parts removed, in the opposite order, of course. Start the engine and allow to reach normal operating temp, then road test. THEORETICALLY, you should simply be able to replace the belt with the new one, and go, as long as you did not move any of the sprockets when removing or installing the belt. Most people do it this way, and do not test for alignment before replacing everything. When the belt wears, timing will be off, very little, and this is why you check alignment. The belt may have slipped a tooth, making the timing off. This is why the Cam and Crank sprockets must both align properly. An experienced person will do just that: Replace the belt, and go. It really isn't all that hard. It helps to have a second person around with some experience also.

This is not your average timing belt replacement due to being a double overhead cam that is also an interferance fit.First remove cooling fans.2-Loosen drive belts and remove.3-Remove crank pully.4-Remove timing covers.You will see 4 cam sprockets.Theses sprockets contain single and double referance marks.You will be using the double referance marks.Rotate engine until the double referance marks are facing each other.This is to be done the same way that the American autos timing Chain systems are done but you will have 2 small double lines to line up not dots.The next step is the most important step and is of utmost imortance.THE CAMSHAFT HAVE TO BE LOCKED IN PLACE--FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN BENT VALVES.The cam sprocket holders can be bought or rented.You can make your own as well by making 2 wedges with bolt through the middle.Slip in between sprockets and tighten enough to hold sprockets.Do not use excessive torque while tightening wedges sprockets are not made of steel but rather a composite material.Next you will have to remove the tenioner.The tensioner has to be retracted and pin istalled to hold in retracted position.The tension device has to be retracted with care or will be damaged.You can not exceed 50 pounds pressure on the plunger.The simplest method is to reract while still in vehicle, it takes 15 minutes to properly retract the plunger.By pulling up on the tensioner by hand with about 18 pounds of force --50 will be exerted at the plunger.When fully retracted insert pin to hold in reracted position.Next check to make sure that cam wedges are holding and no sprocket are trying to move,when satisfied remove one of the rollers at the bottom on the side where you left hand would be standing in front.Pull off belt.Replacement belt will have referance marksone line will go to crank sprocket face up others will line up with other sprocket marks.Reinstall roller followed by tensioner then pull pin you have holding tenioner retracted.Remove wedges.Reinstall covers fans belts.Do not be intimitaded by this replacement.Everything is very easy to get to.Be sure cams are locked and that damage is not done to tensioner and it is straight forward.

Fix a cambelt on a freelander


start by removing top front camshaft cover ,revealing camshaft sprockets. now jack veihcul up and place on stands. remove left hand front wheel (cam belt side) . remove power sterring belt and alternater belt.looking at crankshaft pully and using an 18mm socket and bar rotate pully until all three marks line up. crank on 1st timing mark and and cam marks facing each other when all three line up you can then remove crankshaft pully , you will need an impact wrench that can torque up to 300lbs .when pully has been removed you can then remove the lower belt cover you will then see the belt tensioner and unbolt and remove , now place a jack with protection under sump and remove bolts on engine mount, when you have separted the 2 halves of the engine mount you can remove the belt and install new belt , k,series cam holder tool is use full for re-alineing cam marks camshaft marks facing each other and crank line up with raised mark on engine block,it is then a case of putting every thing back inthe same order it came off.there are 2 type of cam belt tensioner you can email me and i will tell you how to do each type. marcusloud@blueyonder.co.uk.

this is the best guide/instructions I could find on the net and I do allot of this.
take the timing cover off the belt there should be a gear below the camshaft pully its a tensioner use a peice of chalk and mark the very top of the cam pully and the very bottom of the crank pully do your best not to turn them loosen the tensioner pully the belt will loosen up take it off put the new one on if you turned the pully put it back slowly tighten the belt when its tight if the pully turned when tightening pull the slack out by hand then tighten it both chalk marks should be lined up if they are start the car always unplug the battery first and dont rotate the pullys more than a few inches if nessacery when the belt is off you could cause damage to the valves

How to replace timing belt on 1997 kia sportage


you have 2 sprokets to worry about the top two and crank gear, the crank gear has knocht on it and index on block ( towards back of gear visible from top) place on tdc mark ( top dead center), install the timing belt on this gear first then secure it with a piece of hose or anything that fits in between housing and belt to secure belt from moving from gear) then align the right side sproket on "E" for exhaust cam at top marks on cover and sprocket, then install belt over that sprocket, finally align left side sprocket "I" for intake to the top mark and install belt not too tight or it will make noise just make sure it is firm. now to double check from left to right with you standing in front of vehicle you should have left cam sprocket with "I" for intake to the top and right sproket with "E" for exhaust to the top. having bottom gear on tdc (top dead center mark) and all marks lined up with belt installed and proper tension secured, turn engine over twice and make sure marks meet in the same place then put everything back together. ( recommend you replace both idler and tension pulleys and check water pump, replace if needed or you'll be back.- this procedure goes the same to spectra, sephia, sportage, you will not damage the engine on these vehicles if belt goes out except rio. if timing belt goes out on the rio it will need an engine, if lucky just head. recommended replacement on all is every 60k miles) goo luck tightening the power steering drive belt when you put everything back together, just use a long bar to pry and good leverage. and a second hand comes in handy.
