If you have the self-leveling Nivomat rear suspension system, you can replace your Nivomat shock absorbers with standard shock absorbers. You also have to replace the coil springs with standard coil springs. Please note that a combination of standard springs and Nivomat shock absorbers, or Nivomat compatible springs and standard shock absorbers, will not work.

If it is just the cost of springs that you are concerned about, try purchasing your springs elsewhere, and having your local mechanic install them. Two good sources online are; and . You can find Nivomat compatible coil springs for less than $120 per pair.

How easy is it to replace coils? Quoted $240 plus labor

You mean coil springs assume.really depends on suspension strut type contain damper and spring in one unit which while not hard to remove the strut needs to be compressed once off vehicle then taken apart then reassembled.wishbone suspension is less involved but still care needs to be taken.rear springs can be far easier as when jacked up they pretty much fall may be cheaper to by some uprated springs and supply to garage.springs are not normaly expensive. $240 seems bit steep but for original spec from manufacturer can be more costly

My 2005 volvo xc90 is losing power during acceleration. the effect is momentary and I thought it was gas so I used additives. Now the engine light is on and the problem is more general. Any ideas? gas...

I had the same problem and the dealer told me it was one of the coil-over-sparkplug went bad and was causing intermittent misfires at certain RPM's (same as yours). I ordered a new coil for $200 or so then pulled each one out to test them one by one (Volvo won't tell you which one so they can do the work). In the process of doing this I found one of my OEM spark plugs (#5) had a crack on the ceramic insulation. So instead of changing the coil, I changed the plugs and it worked fine. It's been over 6 months I believe and I just had it smogged for registration, so I think it's fixed. I also read that the throttle body electronics on this model is a lemon and sometimes created the exact same symptoms. This is the cheapest way to start, and if you are lucky like me, you're done. If it is the coil, you can get a good aftermarket version on Amazon for less than $100 usd. Good luck. Volvo's are finicky people.... I mean vehicles.

How to replace back strut?

buy a pair of struts on ebay or at a parts store, stay away from dealers. call several shops and ask them for labor costs, go with cheapest. there are special tools needed and a lift makes it so much easier. you do not want to do this yourself. look for "quik struts" which include the strut mount and a new coil spring, the install labor will be cheaper. there will most likely be an adjustment on the bottom of the strut which will need to be set on an alignment rack so use a shop where they have that service.

Surpentine belt

The labor shouldn't be more than two hours and the part should be around $75.00 max. So moderate shop will charge $95.00/hr for labor, a dealer closer to $125/hr. So at a cheaper repair shop, $265 plus tax, at a dealer more like $325 plus tax. Its an important component, but you don't have to get it fixed at a dealer. hope this helps
P.S. Pep boys has cheaper labor and good mechanics.
