I had the same problem with a Tercel, it was the distributor cap had a non-visible hairline crack in it and allowed moisture in.... does it do this only when it rains or high humidity?

How do I know if I need a new starter or alternator is gone out the car won't start but the battery is good

if battery is good, then alternator is ok if battery has not be charged separated from when the car was last running. running a car on battery only, with bad alternator drains battery very quickly.

if battery is ok and new starter installed then the problem would be your spark plugs or your fuel pump...If It's not getting fuel to the carb make sure there is pressure in the needle valve on the fuel regulator.

beware of radio lockout if power disconnected

check battery connections are clean - take off and clean terminals with a wire brush if needed make sure take negative lead off first beware of radio lockout if power disconnected. some cars have a small wire connected to negative terminal that powers the computer involved with fuel injection also check the condition of any leads like this if on your car. Check fuses are ok you could have a hair line fracture in a fuse causing an intermittent fault.

Car wont crank unless pop-started.

I would have that starter tested. It could be intermittently engaging and disengaging. This can happen to the starter drive. I`m not sure why it cuts out after you jump start it,since the alternator takes over after cranking the engine. Unless the starter drive is sticking. My other thoughts are on a fuel pump problem.Or fuel problem period such as an obstruction of gas getting to the engine. Fuel filter maybe or fuel pump relay!

My 2000 Honda Odyssey EX has intermittent start problems. At least once a week it will not start without being jumped with a portable jumping system; sometimes turning the key to ignition for about 30...

Probably when the dealer is testing it is fine because the problem is intermittent. There may be a dead spot in the starter so when it hits that spot it acts up but other times its not on that spot its fine. Replace your starter and you will probably get rid of the problem.

My car wont start!!! could you please help me out?????

First try to get a jump from someone or call a wrecker to give you one. If it cranks, drive it straight to Autozone or similar car care center. If your car drives for more than 10 minutes, you can be reasonably sure it's not the alternator, it's the battery. When you get to the store, have them check the battery. If it's the problem, replace the battery. Then have them check the alternator. If they check the alternator with a bad battery, it will give a false reading indicating the alternator is bad. Don't assume that just because the lights come on that the battery is ok.

If it doesn't jump start, you'll need to check the starter. Does it click but not turn over? If so, you may have a bad starter.

I had a 1991 Suburban that would intermittantly stall out and/or not crank. Turns out there was a loose wire behind the alternator that needed to be reconnected. May check all the wires connecting to the alternator and make sure they're tight.

And just to ask the obvious, it's not out of gas is it?

Persistent 'Battery / Alternator' Fault

Alternators are expensive parts, especially at dealerships. I'm inclined to agree with you, they should have got it right the first time. No shortage of tools with them, but in fairness to them, intermittent faults are the hardest to detect.
They might come back and say you need a new battery, although it does seem odd that a little testing the first time might have caught that.
Those are the two main items in the start circuit you are having trouble with. Well, the battery, the alternator, the starter and the ignition switch, those four items are the main parts of the start circuit. But with a good battery and an alternator to keep the battery charged up, it will crank over every time. Ideally, that means it will start and run.
