Question about 2000 Oldsmobile Alero
If the car runs it's not. if if has high codes low codes in the 50's PO codes Quad driver still can be shorted injector or injector wiring and theECM can still be good Their quite tough as electrical things go in cars and are not usally bad but most unknowing what do do next mechanics will come to that too quickly. Quick test ( not really if you don't test cars as your job day in and day out for years ) unplug an easy senser that is to get to with the engine off and the key on check with a volt meter for the 5 volts referance if the car runs at all its there theres 1/2 volt at the oxagen senser with the wire disconnected and your volt meter isn't too cheap. if its not 5 volts or 12 1/2 or Half then you have a problem to be adressed no voltage maybe the computer is bad. But it won't run or try to no spark no fuel pump no injector pulse. no nothing without senser ref. voltage. Now if it has it we got something to fix we just dont' know what it is yet. If the voltage is low but there then the battery is right or close then theirs some thing shorted like the intake phlem bolted down on the wires for the injectors these cars have lots of injector problems and everybody fixing them can't seem to do the job right with out getting something wrong. Behind the altenaater theres a big plug that is the injector harness unplg it then go back to the coolant temp senser airflow meter throttle position senser and look for the 12 and the 5 volts again. If their back to good you know the problem is under the intake and the 12 volt circuit has a fuse called ecm and theres another called ECM You can still blow the quad driver which is in the computer if you find this problem as it fire the injectors with the grond provided by the computer and if you smash all the wires bolting down the top of the intake computer damage is possible New reman computers can be bought at the dealer and discount auto parts stores for $150 -300 if yours needes to be Flashed Oriley auto parts and Auto zone both do the GM but you have to have the correct VIN as the security system won't let it start if the computer doesnt reconize the car in 95 they change it more so even a junk computer couldnt be reflashed to the correct VIN fot the car. New or rebuilt ( virgin ) only with the Vin added to the blank memery. they charge $ 50 or more as I dont know where you are in the contry and prices can be very different in different states and even what you can get of this nature over the conuter. Some Auto parts may onlly sell these parts to a know certifed mechanic as peaple said they called everywher and the only places that hade it were the junk yards that sold buy the number on the old computer then I call around and every store that I called had it or could get it the next day. Now rember that I'm a 35 year master and mainly a drive mechanic I( I dont change tires trannys rears junk cars ) All the stores know me in my area and the ones that are out of town dont have to talk to me long to figger out I know what I'm doing backwards forwards and sideways and i can get to the end on any road no matter how long. Hope this has helped you. In the box with the new ECM it tells you to determine the reason for failure first before installing the new unit and transferring the chip to the new unit. The sheet tells which wires in which plugs shold be key on power all the time power crank only power then it'll say which ones are grounds and they have to be good ones ( light a powered test light ) then theres a long list of wires that need to be certainOHMs to ground. If you don't do this and just plug it in it may blow right when you hook up the battery. Like the injector harness bolted under the intake. The ohn test will catch this you fir the wires that are pinched plug in the old computer first and start the car. If it runs with the check engine light off your luckly and if the computer hasnt been flashed and you havent broken the seal over where the chip goes you can probly return it if your nice about it. These tests are online at ALLDATA you can get everything you'll ever hope to want to know about your car for a month or a year for a price ($20 ) ? I have all cars but that cost s my boss plenty and hes quick to point it out if you say any thing about it, ( smoke out his ears and it anit coming from his cigeraette ) Hope you win. Don't need no high dollar computer ! You Hope
