2002 BUICK REGAL GS Supercharged: Solid Security light and solid Check Engine Light lit for over a year with the engine running fine before scanning. I scanned all systems with Blue Driver OBD2 Diagnostic Scan Tool while the engine was running. Scan revealed confirmed codes P0102 and B2958. It also displayed historical Security codes B2960, B2957 and B2961. I selected "Clear All Codes" and then the engine died. I attempted to restart the vehicle but the vehicle only clicked, no crank, no start. I attempted the GM Passlock relearn procedure but it did not work. No crank, no start and the solid Security light, Check Engine light still remain. I scanned the system again and current Security code B2958 and historical Security code B2960 are the only codes that remain. Battery is fully charged. Can a scan tool really cause a vehicle not to start? How do I fix this?
Do you know what these DTC'S are ?
DTC B2960
The BCM supplies a 5 volt signal and a ground circuit for the PASS-Key® system. This allows the BCM to detect PASS-Key® resistance values. Inserting the PASS-Key® (with resistor pellet) in the ignition lock cylinder completes the PASS-Key® circuit. Contacts in the ignition lock cylinder mate with the pellet contacts. The BCM compares the resistance value of the key pellet to the valid resistance programmed into the BCM. If the proper resistance value is read, the BCM allows the following functions to occur:
• The BCM sends a message through the class 2 serial data link to the PCM to enable the starter relay.
• The BCM sends a message through the serial data line to the PCM to enable fuel delivery.
If the resistance value is incorrect, a malfunction is present and a DTC will set.
Diagnostic Aids
• The following conditions may cause an intermittent malfunction:
- There is an intermittent open or short to ground on the PASS-Key® signal or ground circuit.
- There are poor connections at the BCM or the ignition switch connector.
- The ignition lock cylinder key contacts or the PASS-Key® resistor are dirty or loose.
• If the key resistor pellet is incorrect, there will be no BCM outputs to the crank relay or to the PCM. This state will last about 3 minutes. If a key is inserted, or the ignition is turned ON again before the 3 minute time frame is complete, the timer will reset to 3 minutes. Disconnecting the battery will not clear the timer sequence, but the timer will reset to 3 minutes when the battery power is restored. Even if a proper key is inserted during one of the time periods, the vehicle will not start until the total time period has elapsed.
Do you know anything about this system ? The scan tool didn't do anything , you did .
By pass the ignition lock cylinder .
measure the resistance of the pellet on your key , go to radio shack an buy resistors . Watch this video .
How to troubleshoot bypass GM VATS Passlock Passkey System
GM VATS Key Resistor Key Security Bypass
SOLVED: I removed the radio/HVAC bezel and steering column top/bottom covers to gain access to the ignition cylinder. One of the small white wires on the ignition switch that sends the resistance value from the key pellet to the GM Passkey system was broken. Before fixing anything, I attempted to start the car and it started right up with wire broken and the security light lit. I soldered the wire together. Car now starts and runs fine with no Security light and no current security codes. I'm still not sure what the cause of the original no start issue was. It truly seemed like the engine dying and not restarting correlated with clearing the security codes. Obviously the wire damage was a long standing issue that needed to be corrected. Anyways, thank you for your input. It is truly appreciated.
Good , glad to help ! That is a common accurance

SOURCE: obd1 scan tool will notaccess
A couple of ways to check and see if the computer is ok first:
check engine light must come onwith they in on position
The fuel pump must run for two (2) seconds with the key ON
There must be a 5 volt reference at sensors like map, TPS
Must communicate with scan tool
The ORANGE wires at the computer are you power input wires one has 12V all the time this is your KEEP ALIVE MEMORY
one is 12 with the Key on you MUAT HAVE VOLTAGE AT BOTH
Check the computers Ground most are out under the hood and are brown wires
Try the GM TAP TEST this is a factory authorized test with the computer connected and you verified all of the above SLAP the computer with the open hand firmly not too hard but firm see if anything changes,
Do not disconnect the battery you will erase all the codes!
