There are only two bolts that hold the carriier bearing to the crossmemmber under the truck. You do, however, have to remove the drive shaft so that you can get the carrier bearing off of it. It is pressed onto the driveshaft.

How do I replace my carrier bearing in a 1988 Chevy Silverado extended cab long bed?

I'm guessing your you are referring to the drive shaft center support bearing. Remove u-joint 4 bolts at rear diff., then 2 bolts for center support. Slide driveshaft assembly out of trans. and lay on ground. On either side of the center support, make alignment marks on front and rear half of drive shafts with a crayon or tape (very important for re-assembly). Slide rear half off. Press out center support. Clean sleeve with emery cloth or 400 grit sand paper. Press on new center support, lube splines and reconnect drive shaft halves making sure alignment marks meet. Install assembly and torque bolts.

I have been told my front wheel bearing is bad. Can replace the just bearing or do I have to replace the whole hub assembly.

the bearing and hub are peened as a assembly and will need to be pressed out of hub carrier on early 05. later models use a one piece bearing that will need to have hub pressed out, then bearing pressed out of carrier both bearings are avalable aftermarket

2001 1500 chevy silverado rear axle removal ?

Typically, Chevy rear ends either have a bearing bolt plate or else it is a "c" lock axel. With the c lock style, you have to pull teh center inpsection cover off, and remove the pin that holds the IDLEing spyder gears.

The spyder gears are inside the carrier assembly. once the idler shaft is removed, you press the axle IN, towards the center of the vehicle, and then look in the area where the idler shaft was removed. You will see the C clip and the notch in the end of the axle.

How to remove rear axle 03 chevy silverado

You will have to remove the rear end plate off of the back of the rear end. Then turn the carrier untill you see a big silver pin that goes through the spider gears. Those will be 4 small gears in the rear end carrier. If you look at the right side of the carrier were the pin goes through it you will see a small bolt head, That bolt goes through the carrier and holds the pin in place. Remove that bolt then reach up in the rear end housing and push the pin towards you untill it comes out. ( DO NOT TURN ANYTHING AFTER YOU REMOVE THE PIN) are the spider gears will fall out.

Now get someone to push the axel in while you are looking at the 4 small gears in the housing, when they push the axel in a C-clip will fall off the end of the axel and into the rear end, You will see it fall out. Then just pull the axel out.

When you put the axel back in, push it all the way in then slide the c-clip over the end of the axel and then pull out on axel and that will hold the clip in place untill you put the big long pin back in the carrier. I hope you understand, just watch what you are doing. GOOD LUCK.

What is the procedure to change a rear wheel bearing in a 2001 Silverado

After removing the wheel, pop the dust cap off of the center of the spindle, revealing the front axle nut. Remove the nut and washer. Remove the brake caliper and hang it with some wire or whatever you have on hand. (to keep from damageing the flex line). Now, BE CAREFUL, you now have to remove the abs sensor. It is held on with an allen bolt. (metric size) CAREFULLY lift the sensor up and out of the well in the bearing housing. THEY CAN BREAK EASILY so hold your mouth right! Now, the worst could be over... But not always! There are three bolts behind the backing plate that need to be removed, after which the entire spindle should simply fall out. One of mine did, but the other...well it was so froze-up that my gear puller actually pulled the bearing assembly apart rather than pulling the whole assembly off. (The bearing assembly halves are put together with a press!)Speaking of that, if the assembly co-operates and falls off it will have to be pressed apart. There is a tapered bearing and a roller bearing inside. You can usually have the pressing done at a local machine shop. (unless of course you have a press of your very own.) For re-assembly try holding this document in the mirror.
