Hey Everyone, it has been almost an uneventful year until just 3 days ago my caliber decided to have a serious issue. I have a 2008 Caliber 2.0L fwd cvt, and 3 days ago, while I was leaving a parking garage, I suddenly lost power, the CEL was flashing, p0216 and p0302 codes showed up in my obd2 code reader, Now car sputters hard and almost feel like it will stall out, loss of power during acceleration. I also smell oil when I start the car. The car idles rough, I also checked the oil levels in the engine via dipstick and it was ok and the color is like a normal transparent brown color. The coolant level is good too. I was so scared I thought I blew the engine but I was able to drive it home at 30mph. I tried to look online and most people are saying it is a misfire in cylinder 2 and could be a bad spark plug, bad coil, or fuel injector. I plan on buying copper plugs on Thursday and then installing them to see it that will help. Any other ideas it can be?
If the plugs don't fix it then the piston rings inside your cylinder could have aligned. That would cause compression to be able to leak past the cylinder heads and give you low compression. Could also be a broken rocker arm or piston arm. The rocker arms are easy to change but to get to the piston rings and arms you have to dissemble your engine. Hopefully your new plugs will work. You could also get a spark plug gauge and crimp down on the plugs if the gap is too big if you really don't want to spend the money on new plugs.Basically you would put the spark plugs in the gauge and while it's there take something and push down on the head of the plug to crimp it back down to the right gap tolerance. Good luck to ya.
Hey I wanted to update you on it, after changing the spark plugs I put everything back and I was greeted with a p0303, c0300 codes along with the same p0302 code , and p2016 code.
I decided to swap around the ignition coils to see if it was the coils that are bad. I did have a c0700 code but that disappeared.
After about 2 hours are trying different positions and patterns I decided to quit for the day. I checked the codes after every swap.
I ended up with still the p0302, p0004, C0300, p0301, p2016. The car ran bad you can hear the engine misfire when you accelerate. The car shook bad and there was white smoke from the exhaust for a good 3 to 4 minutes but it doesn't have white smoke every time you start the car after the initial warm up. I am considering buying brand new coils for the car, but I fear I might have blown a gasket or like you said a bad piston rings or rocker arm. I am considering just doing the 2.4 swap and just buying new wiring harness, and ecu along with the engine.
I also noticed the engine shook a lot while running and realized the engine mount/ transmount on the bottom is broken

SOURCE: Check Engine Light is on and the code is P0303
Hello I need a help.
I have 1999 lincoln town car 4.6L V8.They have check engine light on. P 0303 cylinder 3 missfire.
I was changed spark plugs, fuel filter. check compression test 150psi. fuel pressuer 50.
swiching cylinder 1 to 3 fuel injector and coil. but they still have engine code
SOURCE: I am getting a misfire
I've got a 2002 Grand Prix GTP 3.8L Supercharged V6, nearly the same motor.
I had the exact same problem, misfire on Cyl. 5 and random/multiple misfire.
I replaced all the wires, plugs, coils, and even the ignition module. My next thought was either fuel or exaust.
Replaced my Cat. with a 2.5" ZZP downpipe, and the car ran alot better, but still had a tiny bit of hesitation over 4000rpms.
So i checked all the fuel injectors, and the #5 injector was bad.
To check, get an ohm meter, remove the injector connectors, and contact the 2 posts inside the injector. They should read between 12.4-14 or so.
Mine was at 11.2.
Replaced all the fuel injectors, and she runs like a champ

could be the type of plug you are using.I was told only to use ngk plugs.I recently put bosch plugs in my mazda 3 and the check engine light came on and it started missfiring.

A multi misfire may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Faulty spark plug or wires, Faulty coil (pack), Faulty oxygen sensor(s), Faulty fuel injector(s), Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages, Faulty camshaft position sensor, Defective computer.
The engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wire, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the the problems were faulty fuel injectors.
Random misfires that jump around from one cylinder to another (read: P030x codes) also will set a P0300 code. The underlying cause is often a lean fuel condition, which may be due to a vacuum leak in the intake manifold or unmetered air getting past the airflow sensor, or an EGR valve that is stuck open.
Good luck and hope this information helps, keep me posted, be glad to help you get the truck running 100% again. Not sure if your running a K&N air filter, and if you are there may be a flim of oil on the MAF sensor that is making you run lean. You may want to spray down the MAF sensor with a can of MAF cleaner.

Does it have the 2.3l Quad 4 engine? If so replace the plastic piece that the coils go into, they go bad and leak spark to the cam towers and then you get a nice one or multiple cylinder misfire.
