It is normal that you hear the fuel pump trying to pump gas with the key on. In most cases...if hadn't noticed it before, it may be that the pump is burnt up from running out of gas.

There are various things that it could be...your fuel pump MAY still be good.

Danger of running gas out like that is, after years, sediment and stuff in the tank as well as water/condensation build up inside. When running lower than a 1/4 tank, the injectors, fuel filter and all start sucking that stuff up.

Your fuel injectors may be clogged, the fuel filter may be clogged or the pump may now be bad/burnt up. If you are hearing the noise, it likely isn't burnt out, it most likely is still working.

I hope this helps, at least some.
Good luck!

Hey there,

It turns over, right? Fuel hasn't gotten to the engine yet.

Try a spritzing a little starting ether or carb cleaner in the air intake. Then try it again.

sounds like the fuel filter sucked some crud out of the tank. Try replacing the fuel filter.

Engine cranks but won t start

Unfortunately there is no circuit breaker. Without being able to see the car myself to diagnose it and based on the symptoms you state, I would say off the top of my head that there is a problem with the sensor that recognizes crankshaft position, or crankshaft position sensor as it is better known. DO NOT JUST GO AND BUY ONE. There are other tests.

When you first turn on the key without trying to start the vehicle, do you heard a very soft click after about 3-5 seconds. This is the fuel pump relay bringing the fuel system up to pressure.

If you can get someone to check to see if there are any codes stored in the computer, it would aid in my diagnosis.

Car won't start....is getting no power

A mechanic would take a meter or test light and check the major circuits for power as well as the ground connections.
There are fuseable links which act as fuse wires that protect the major circuits in addition to the regular fuses.

2002 Ford Explorer ran out of gas put gas in and won't restart. replaced fuel pump and fuel filter still won't start. Cranks but won't start

Most Fords have a fuel reset button. When you ran out of gas you tripped the circuit. Most of the time the button will be on the passenger side by the kick panel. The exact location should be in your owners manual or your local library or auto parts store will have a copy of one for your specific vehicle.

Honda passport ran out of gas. now won't start. Could be gas filter?Put 5 gals of gas in tank. Will start with gas added to air flter intake, but won't stay running

It's possible that you have an air bubble in the fuel line. This blocks fuel from reaching the engine. To clear it, you will have to bleed the line at the fuel filter.

The other possibility is that the fuel pump is not working. Turn the ignition key to the on position. You should be able to hear the fuel pump humming. If not, check the fuel pump fuse, in the fusebox under the hood. If the fuse is ok, you will need to trouble-shoot the pump.

you are either lacking SPARK or FUEL. You put 5 gal in the tank, but is the FUEL PUMP working ? The lights and radio operating only indicate ther is power in the battery.. Hope this helps.
