'99 2500 Z71,5.3 engine will not turn over had problems with the alternater before just got it out of the shop now it wont even turn over it just clicks once and the gages work just wont turn over

your bat is weak, replace it and it should work, i had the same problem with mine

my car has the same exact problem!! i have 2 pop the clutch 2 get it started when it is hot. Mine starts great when its cold or hasn't ran 4 awhile but when we are driving around for more than about 20 min in it when we stop it doesn't start at all. it wont even turn over. so i have 2 have my husband push it while i pop the clutch & then it starts & runs fine till the next time we turn it off. its not a battery problem as we'v replaced the battery, & the starter & the alternater are fine as we'v had them tested. hopefully someone that knows & has fixed this problem can answer this mystery problem!! hopefully some1 can :D

I don't know if you should go out and buy an alternater because your light came on and the shop say do it. What other problems have you been having with your car?

Looks like you have done almost everything to solve your problem. Perhaps you may want to check the ground cable, especially where it attaches to the frame or body. Use a good test light attached to a ground on the engine and touch the positive terminal If it doesn't light then you know you have a ground problem between the battery and the test light.

sounds like alternater is not charging-however you should charge the battery and have it tested-if the battery is getting weak it can cause the alternater to over work causing a failure

There is a SHORT in the Alternater, This HEAT is Caused By RESISTANCE and Without the Engine even Running It Being HOT INDICATES An INTERNAL FAILURE. Remove the ALTERNATER Have it BENCH TESTED and Replace Alternater to Correct this Problem.I am Confident this is the problem.

It is very possible that you need a new starter. If the engine wont even turn over like its trying to start then its the started. If the engine is trying to start but wont then its probably the fuel pump.

Is starter engaging but is turning the engine slowly then not turning engine? (that's what I'm reading) If so, check both connections at the block and starter. If reading proper voltage 12v or better, check voltage across battery when in "start" if it drops below 9.5v the starter has failed. (you can turn the engine by hand...correct?)
