Question about 1998 Chevrolet Venture Cargo

1 Answer

For my 1998 Chev Venture I had the exaust system replaced from the catalytic converter on (original problem was tailpipe broke off after the muffler) and the next day got a check engine indication that the garage says is catalytic converter effeciency - is this really a coincidence in timing or did the repair accidentally poisen or break the catalytic converter

If high mileaged could probably be a cat. But more liklly sounds like a sensor. Vibration from removal may have done something. But I wouldnt blame the shop for it. After all it is an older van

I have Mitsubishi grandis 2004 and the Catalytic Converter is not working

Do you replace it yourself?
Two possible answers. Bad gas (never use leaded fuel)
Defective products.
They seldom go bad. I Have 260,000 on a chev truck and have never replace the catolic converter. Three or four mufflers/tailpipes in that time.

Starts, idles, and revs fine, but hardly goes on the road, like a huge power loss! new plugs, wires, coils, and fuel pump.

Hi,
May be related to a plugged catalytic converter in the exhaust system. You'll need to take it to a muffler shop to get fixed. You do NOT need a 'factory/original manufacture catalytic converter'. A universal one (much cheaper is fine).

1999 Dodge Ram won't go faster than 20 mile per hour. Hardly any air flow from tailpipe. Thinking a clogged catalytic converter?

If the catalytic converter has been inoperative for a long time there could have been soot or even creosote deposits in the muffler and they could have clogged even it. So first disconnect the muffler and see how the truck behaves.

Blown exhaust on a vw passat can i fix it?

There is only one way to really fix a blown exaust and thats to replace it. It's not a bad job as long as you can get the car hi enough off the ground. You need a 14 mm wrench 13mm wrench WD40 14mm-13mm sockets and a swear jar for the kids so they make money!! Find out what part of the pipe is blowing by putting a potato over the end of the system with the car running. Perhaps you only need a small portion of the system.

1998 S70 and After Market Cataltic Converter

How does it "sound like it's going bad"? It's aftermarket, and it isn't the same as OEM. It won't sound the same either. That doesn't mean it's bad. They might have left a gasket loose, making an unusual and loud sound.

Lack of power

If the catalytic converter disintegrated before you replaced it, the muffler may have been clogged by chunks of ceramic falling from the cat and migrating back to the muffler.
Try this: drive the car warm, then stop and with a helper to gradually raise the RPMs while standing, listen at the tailpipe. If you clearly hear the individual firing of the engine then the system is probably clear. If you notice that the sound is more of a hiss, then either the muffler or (if it has one) the resonator are clogged.
On a car with a heavy-gauge stainless exhaust system, two shots from a .357 magnum into the tailpipe opened it up again (forever) and didn't really make much difference in the loudness of the exhaust. I wouldn't recommend doing that with most exhaust systems though.
