Question about Pontiac Grand Prix

I have no hazards or brake lights or turn signals. I saw smoke from the area of my steering column. Is it possibly the hazard switch? and how do I remove it?

This is very common The Miltifunction switch is bad. Its part of the blinker handle( all one unit.) Go to kragen.com and put in your vehicle. then type in Multifunction switch. This site is pretty good at giving you a picture of the part so you can understand what might be involved in removing it. Usually you do not need to remove the steering wheel. Just the covers on the other side. You may have to remove the dash panel also.

If you saw smoke coming out from the steering column, then it is not the hazard switch. It is the wiring harness inside the steering column that caused a short. The short probably blew several light fuses, and /or broke contacts to turning lights. Moreover , if the problem was just the hazard lights switch, the turning lights will work. The steering column must be taking apart to fix the wiring harness.

There are 4 screws under the steering wheel, two on top, and two on the lower side. After you undo the screws the panel will snap off.

    Some instructions here.

Have you checked the fuses in the cockpit are they blown? did the smoke come from the fuses or from where?

I would recommend buying a Repair manual for your car, those contain alot of information and will help you in most repairs.

2000 Chevy Cavalier brake lights

Yes, if your turn signals in the back use the same filaments as the brakes, the multi-switch must allow the brake signal through when the turn signals are not activated. There are multiple diagrams for your system, so I'm not sure what you have. If you have the light blue wire that goes from the brake switch ul the column to the turn switch, make sure it is getting power when the pedal is pressed. It should go thru the switch as shown in the second diagram below.

No turn signals

You will need a new multifunction switch, not a fuse. this is a simple repair. Remove the upper cover from the steering wheel and then slide the multiswitch up and off. that's it

First check turn signal fuse and relay if, they are good then try pressing on and off the hazard switch while turning the signal switch on.If signals start to work replace hazard switch. If hazard switch is good then replace turn signal switch.

Seems that the hazard switch nalfucntion and no

Replace the multi-function switch in the steering column. The 3rd brake light is powered directly off the brake switch while the regular brake lights are wired thru the turn signal switch. Common problem

I have no signals and when brakes lights are on, lose brake light to either side turn signal is set on

Hi!!

If you activate the turn signal switch and you step on the brake pedal, the turn switch (on the steering column) deactivates the brake light to make the signal light more visible. The bulb for the stop and turn lights is the same.

Turn hazard lights ON. If they don't blink, replace turn/hazard flasher, If one or more lights don't come on, replace bulb.

Check fuse and circuit wiring for broken or loose connections. If all looks fine, check following:

If front turn lights work fine, check brake/turn bulbs.

If turn lights come on but don't blink, replace turn signal/hazard flasher.

If front and back turn lights don't come on, replace switch on column.

Let me know how it worked out, Good Luck
