1995 Jeep Cherokee Country straight 6 cyl 4.0L: I

1995 Jeep Cherokee Country straight 6 cyl 4.0L: I always have to crank the engine for 15 to 20 seconds before it starts - acts like it's not getting enough fuel to start becuse if you step on the gas it seems to start a little better. Have replaced the fuel filter, but not the pump. Are the fuel pump(s) supposed to turn on when you turn the key from the "off" position, or don't they start until you are cranking the engine?

Thanks for the reply - Sorry I didn't mention it before, but have also replaced plugs, cap, rotor, air cleaner, plug wires - replaced them just because they were old. Plugs didn't show any sign of oil, they were nice and clean - just worn out. On several other cars (not Jeeps) that I have worked on, the pump comes on before you get to the cranking position, so I was wondering exactly what the sequence of events is when starting this Jeep. Sounds like I need to find out what the fuel pressure is supposed to be at the injectors - then check mine out. That's all I can think of doing other than maybe a compression check.

First of all, the fuel pump is generally located in the fuel tank, not always though. Yours probably is, in did not research it. The fuel electric fuel pump turns on only when the ignition key switch is turned to the start position and then left on. A series of one or two relays along with a pressure monitor in the fuel rail delivery system may or not cycle it on and off depending on design. Enough of that. I suggest that you remove the spark plugs to see if they are oil/heavy cabon deposits. If so, professional attention is reguired. One more thing you could try is replacing the spark plug wires. the may be old/worn out/damage. This would give the engine spark a stronger spark,if worn and also replace the spark plugs.

I'am assuming this is when the motor is cold.1st thing in the morning.Check that the auto choke is working. If it's stuck or not working this would make it do like you say. There is also a fuel filter located on the left-side frame rail, near the fuel tank.Be careful with this as the fuel line is under constant pressure.Fuel pump is located in the tank. Can be removed with tank in car.Its held in place with a cam-lock.If you do replace the pump, there are 2 types.they are not interchangeable.Types TBI and MPI.Hope this helps.P.s.Do the choke first

1995 JEEP CHEROKEE COUNTRY HAS BEEN STALLING AND THEN I AM HAVING TROUBLE GETTING IT TO RESTART. IT ALWAYS DOES RESTART JUST MAY TAK E A FEW MINTUES TO 20 MINUTES OR SO BEFORE IT WILL. NO CHECK ENGINE...

Does it die coming to a stop or die when driving. Will it restart if holding down on gas pedal a little? May be carbon on throttle body. Bad crank sensor will cause this also. Doesnt always set a code. Loss of fuel pressure will cause this with no code.

95 jeep cherokee country 6 cyl auto. wont crank all the time

Bad solenoid i would guess. Not making a connection there. Any basic wiring and ignition switch problems should be alleviated by jumping the starter with a screwdriver. I would check the solenoid and starter brushes

Location/testing of crank sensor 1995 jeep wrangler

Should be on the bellhousing on the drivers side just where you need rubber arms to reach it.Should have no continuity between b&c terminals (check with ohmeter) Harness plug is usually on the drivers side between the master cyl and the back of the engine (unless someone moved it)

1995 Cherokee Stopped Runnng

Check to see if you have spark. The most common cause of this kind of problem is the crankshaft sensor, located on the drivers side of the bellhousing, even with the flywheel. Most manuals have test procedures for checking these with a good digital volt ohmeter.
