Install from the head down, placing the end with the brass stop on it at the head end. If you feel lots of resistance when pushing it through, the cable housing may be torn up. When you get it through cut off any excess so that it can easily be placed in drive gear end. Use chain and bar oil on new cable...I've found it works longer and better than anything else.

Speedometer Cable replacement

A universal kit will work for your application. Most of the time the center cable is what is damaged.

1. Remove speedometer cable from transmission
2. Remove speedo gear retainer and remove speedo gear.
3. Pull out cable from sheath - If broken you will only get part of it
4. Remove instrument panel and pull out section of cable still trapped in cable sheath if applicable.

For re install follow directions on package.

Pointers

1. Cable appears un-damaged: Check to make sure the speedo gear is not damaged where the cable enters it. Then also check the back of the speedo head cable hole for damage.
2. You can measure you two broken pieces to arrive at an appropriate length for ordering purposes.
3. Make sure this is well lubricated on install otherwise the speedo can jump up and down or damage the new cable.

Speedometer won't come on

You almost certainly have a bad speedo cable. You could have a broken speedometer, but that is like seeing hoofprints and assuming a zebra is near. Speedo cables die all the time, and your car has a mechanical speedometer which uses a cable - like a brake or shifter cable on a bicycle, but the inner part rotates instead of moves back and forth.

Repair kits cost only a few bucks, but may or may not fix the problem.

New speedo cables should be available at your favorite local auto parts store. If not, you can remove it (or have someone remove it) and take it to a speedometer repair shop - most bigger cities have at least one.

Kicks when shifting and zerro power to speedometer

The harsh shifting and nonfunctional speedometer means you have to replace the VSS or vehicle speed sensor. On your truck Ford uses the RABS or rear antilock brake sensor for both the ABS system and the speedometer. It's raybestos part number #ABS530000 . I have a 95 Caprice and let someone hook up the stereo. Now the speedometer now is like 20-30 miles per hour off. Is there a way to reset it? Also before I bought the car someone had tried to break in the...

First let your buddy that installed the radio off the hook. The speedometer has nothing to do with the radio. You may disconnect the cable at the tranny and see if the gears are stripped at all.Next you can order a new lock online or from gm. The kit will tell you how to install. Hope it helps.
