We have a 1996 Toyota Camry that blows blue smoke when we start the engine. It has pretty low mileage around 87K. What could the problem be?

Well does it do it when you first start up then goes away? or does it always burn blue smoke? if it does it just when you start it it means you have the possability of having bad valve guide seals, or a bad PCV valve, you can check theat by removing it from the hose and shaking it back and forth it it rattles it may be ok but is cheep enought to fix, also look inside the air cleaner and see if the crank case ventalator is dirty, next would be a top engine clean with GM's Top engine cleaner and to do that I would have to tell you excatly what to do, that costs about 12 dollars but with the fuel the way it is today you could have sticking rings and once it warms up the loosen up and seal, so let me know.

That is caused by what are known as "valve guide seals" They are very inexpensive to purchase but very expensive to install, If you dont mind that puff of smoke in the morning, this can be ignored for a long time. P.S. keep an eye on your oil level.

When starting toyota fortuner 3.0 liter blowing blue smoke what is causing this

It is oil smoke. The most common causes are worn valve guide seals, a faulty PCV valve, or, worn or broken oil control rings on the pistons. Only 1 or 2 cylinders need be at fault.

Check the PCV valve for fouling. Have a compression test done. If readings are low or irregular, pour a few ccs of engine oil into the suspect cylinders thru the plug holes. If compression readings then improve, it is probably the rings at fault.

Less common causes are worn big end bearings spraying excessive oil up the cylinder walls, or a leak from the head gasket, oil to cylinder.

Engine oil light blanking of and on when driving

It could be
-low oil level-faulty oil pressure sender unit
-stuck over pressure relief valve in the oil pump-worn engine bearings
The first step is to check the oil level, and if OK, have a mechanic take out the oil pressure sender and substitute an oil pressure gauge. Ask for a look at the reading as the engine is run then.

These gauges are cheap enough if you wish to do this yourself, and you can then install it on the dash somewhere.

Often if the engine bearings are that worn, the car will blow blue smoke and consume oil.

In the meantime keep the revs down as much as possible.

Coolant boiling in resevoir.

It can be faulty coolant temperature sensor. Its not sensing exact coolant heat temperature so its overheating then required level.

-----------

Get the coolant pressure tested, its definitely leaking coolant. You will need to get the coolant running line.

Pressure test will help you to know from where exactly coolant/refrigerant is getting leaked.

Blowing blue smoke and chugging

Blue smoke usually means your buring oil. I recommend bringing the vehicle to a repair shop and have them determine whether the problem is engine mechanical ,Defective PCV valve, or an over oil filled engine or transmission.

My 1996 LE toyota corolla has a very low fuel mileage. Like it runs just 300km on 45 liters of fuel. This is a very bad mileage for 1.8L engine. Otherwise, car start, idles and runs fine. The spark plugs...

Check each wheel to determine if you have a brake dragging. If you raise a wheel off the ground, you will hear a little brake drag, but the wheel should turn pretty freely. If you find a wheel(s) that are difficult to turn, you know you need to service your brake calipers.

Smokes for a few seconds on first start in morning

This is probably oil burning off which has seeped by the valves and rings overnight. Sign of a higher-mileage engine. An oil additive for high-mileage engines may help.

Otherwise, it's not a serious problem, just fair wear and tear.

Oil consumption, no smoke, no leaks

Yes a crappy PVC valve can cause some of your problems but not necessarily all of them, they are cheap, I always replace it to start. The air cleaner housing being full of oil is like how the oil is being consumed. In addition to a PVC valve, there may also be a blow-by hose running into the housing. check to see what other hoses go into the housing & which ones have oil coming from them. I'm not familiar with the "Motor Honey" you mentioned but I rarely add additives to my Engine oil, especially if they are thickeners. The only stuff I recommend is a Quaker state or similar "High Mileage Oil". These semi-synthetic oils have additives to swell old rubber & cork seals in older engines and can help reduce oil consumption & leakage. Again, it may not be a total solution, but it couldn't hurt to drain out all of the existing oil & replace with a high mileage type & also change the filter at the same time. Never mix it with other oils, despite the manufacturer telling you it may be safe to do so.
