Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Engine died while driving. 1997 Cheap Cherokee

No power after several attempts to restart. Test Power Distruibution Center and all fuses have power except for one 15a fuse that show no idication what it powers.Used a fuseable jumper wire to replace the relay and the test light showed power. the Interior ligths and head lights come on. Instument panel does not ligt and no crank. Can anyone please give me any leads for a cure to this diease?

First off, make sure you have at least 12v in the battery. Items you mentioned will work at lower voltages. There may be a 20A fuse on the fuse block inside the cabin that controls ignition etc. check that as well. As always, make sure battery contact surfaces are clean and tight. Check power at starter trigger wire by checking volts there with a test light or meter with the key turned to start. You may have a bad ignition switch. This may be the cause of initial shut-down. I know what I just wrote isn't in the normal order but something here will give you an idea where to look next.

Check your crank sensor please, make sure all fuse and relay is good, make sure your have 12v power, check to make sure you have the three element, spark, air and gas. once all three is present vehicle will start.

which engine?
sounds to me like you need to watch the dash voltmeter
if it reads zero , running the PCM , and spark all die
as does engine stall.. so that is first. Voltage.
if the gauge is missing like on some cars, (sad) add one
or connect any voltmeter to the CIG lighter socket (aka. power port today)
or go to any auto store and buy the cheap tool that fits there.
called a battery/alt tester (some have LEDs that shift to good , bad)
a real voltmeter works better showing real volts.
When and engine dies. the PCM sees this, and tries everything
in its power to stop that, (fuel and air supplies)
but failed. as the PCM falls below the 300 RPM it knows it lost the battle and then goes to boot up self tests. with the CEL glowing
if it fails to show the CEL, (stalled) that means in all cases...
the PCM lost power.
lost DC power distribution. for many a reason.

from loose or bad fuses, or bad ignitions switch or as per above
filthy battery lugs.
how i fix these, (sure it must fail to fix it....... or go broke guessing)
is
  1. i drive with the voltmeter connected full time. per above.
  2. I say it drop. to 0v driving. oops. that is bad.
  3. I then move the red test lead (black is on body ground)
  4. I move it forward in the path of power distributution, that means to the fuse box in cab that runs ECU power.
  5. I then see if the power is lost before that fuse or after.
  6. i before i work to the engine bay main fuse box. PDC.
  7. I then find the point power does not drop
  8. the failure IS between those 2 points,!!!

Motor shuts off when started up,shuts off when driving.


hot engine or cold, or both? 180F+ is hot.
Shuts off, idling or on the fly, say at 30mph right foot down it dies?
just clue here...
engine stalls. is complex. but in the macro its below, using tools finds the reason,, but you never said did it restart easy./??????
1: lost of engine compression hot engine, (or overheated)
2: lost 12vdc electric power at stall (caused it) dash goes dead. ?
3: lost spark, test spark at the failure point. if dead trouble shoot speak.
4 bad fueling, too lean (say the fuel pump dies) or too rich.
too rich causes wet spark plug tips. (lots of causes )
5: stalls due to idle RPM too low, below 800 is too low.
too low idle rpm is caused by many things, but top 2 are.
A: EGR stuck wide open, clean it, as the books shows at 60k miles
B: ISC stuck closed. (same deal clean it)

now repost and say when it stalled,
at a read light or flying up a hill wot, wot= wide open throttle.
and when it dies, is the restart easy or hard.

My buddy has a 1988 Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0L. He was driving it home and it started acting like it was running out of gas. Then it died and wouldn't restart. Now the fuel pump will not turn on,


I kind of agree it may be the ecu. but first, look for a green 20amp fusible link, turning into a red wire. Your wiring diagram shows this fusible link is the power source for the fuel pump relay. It is called Fuse Link G. Should be near the battery.

there would have been enough induced voltage flying back through the electrical system to keep the motor running.This is not always a good test.A little bit more explanation would be helpful.Does that check gauge remain on or off while driving normally?When it goes off or on does it do it spasmodically or does it do it until you restart the engine?Regards

My ac, power windows, the power locks, ALL Stopped working!!!


There is a power accessory relay under the hood or inside the fuse block/power distribution center that feeds these accessories. The relays wear out, rendering everything they feed inoperative. ChryCo often used the same part/numbered relay for several locations in the Power Distribution Center on numerous ChryCo-branded vehicles, including Jeeps.

check the fuse with a test light for power. if there is power on both sides of the fuse carefully insert the test light into the outlet and check the very center for power...if there is no power you have a wiring or connection problem.. if there is only power on one side of the fuse the fuse is bad

I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cylinder. You might want to check the Ignition Off Draw (IOD) fuse in the Electrical Power Distribution center located in the black box located just in front of the coolant fill container on the left side under the hood. This is a 40 amp fuse, orange in color and is the orange fuse closest to the firewall. This fuse is used to put the jeep in storage if you don't plan to drive it for a while. Which would stop the current flow and not allow your battery to die. GOOD LUCK!

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee cranks but won't start


Same thing happened to me at about 140k. It was the fuel pump. Best way to test if your pump is failing and loosing pressure is to see if the car will start immediately after it has been running, or turn the key to the alt position for a few minutes before starting. If your engine fires faster after it has been running or the key has been in the alt position you will probably need a new fuel pump. Great news is with a very deep socket to get the tank straps off its a 30 minute job to replace the pump/filter assembly.
